Hello folks,

The old dear wants a new car, her Citroen C3 was brand new when we bought it 8 years ago but she’s worried about a major failure and would like a new car, possibly her last but hopefully not.

Essentials:
Hybrid, petrol possibly full electric but not keen on full electric.
Ideally no more than a few cm wider than the C3
Automatic
High seating position-really important.

I’m taking her out on Friday to have a look at a few. Hence suggestions needed. We will either HP or PCP this and the budget in that case 300ish ideally less per month but we have around 3k deposit.

Hyundai Inster, I like but Mum’s not seen one yet, she’s gone Toyota Aygo. This isn’t my area of expertise so I’d appreciate any advice.

Higher seating position suggest an SUV? If so, how about an MG ZS Hybrid. If that is too big and an SUV isn't required how about an MG3 Hybrid. The Trophy is the model to go for and isn't much more per month.

Have to say an 8 year old car is basically new to me, I am sure it will last for years.

Kia Soul? We have one and of the various older passengers that have been in it, they have always said the seating position is great and the visability.

A Toyota Yaris Cross or Toyota Aygo X might fit the bill.

My parents (late 70s) drive a Kia Niro and really like it. Small enough without being tiny, higher seating position without being an SUV. Hybrid auto is a piece of cake to drive and very economical, long warranty etc

It has to be a Honda Jazz or Nissan Micra.

My Mum's 73 and is on her 4th or 5th Jazz. Loves them.

It occurs to me she didn't fit the profile in the early noughties when she got her first one, but clearly does now!

+1. Yaris Cross is easy to get into, indestructible and has a 10 year warranty if it's serviced annually. Or Jazz but I think you sit a bit lower in those.

As well as the Aygo X or Honda Jazz Cross thingy, what about the Suzuki Ignis? It's tall, very well priced, they have loads of kit for the cash and Suzuki have an excellent reliability record.

Jazz is the one. I am a similar age and tried one - a very good vehicle. But I could not part from my 335d. (My wife still hankers after an Alfa)

Would a Dacia spring be any use? Small, upright, cheap and 100 real world miles might suffice

Mg3 drivers seat sheared in safety tests, wouldn’t have one for free!

78 years old....
This perhaps?

Jokes aside, Hyundai i20 and i10 are good small cars albeit non-hybrid. i30 has the hybrid drive train.
Audi A3, BMW 1 series, Ford Puma, Suzuki Swift are probably some of the more interesting and well rounded offerings in my opinion.

A lot of the reason people think a higher driving position is desirable is because of visibility.

In a Jazz the bonnet drops away sharply and the windscreen is BIG, hence forward visibility is extraordinary.

So she should test drive one. I bet she would love it.

The higher seat position is because as you get older it's much more difficult to get in and out of conventional height salon cars . Visibility is a bonus but not why the elderly like a higher car . I like a higher car .

The H-point (hip joint position) on a Jazz is probably about where it was in most 1950s cars, that is, at a comfortable position. Only in the late 1950s, early 1960s, did the H-point become lower. Fashion and styling, I assume
