HGV in the wrong place
Discussion
Scenario:
HGV in a residential area missed a distribution centre about half a mile away because of Sat Nav directions which took him into a residential estate in the dark (late evening in Autumn).
Trying to turn around, churns grass verges, hits a lampost, when residents come out, drives off rapidly across the pavement within 50 feet of a children's park leaving debris on the pavement for 150 feet.
Registration noted and major retail branding on the lorry.
I called the local distribution centre and also logged it online with police due to damage and dangerous driving.
Police said they would not follow up. Distribution centre said it was a sub-contractor so no responsibility. Retailer referred me back to the distribution centre.
What would you do?

Ah well he wasn't speeding you see so it's all OK...
But seriously, 'within 50 feet of a children's park' = he was 50 feet away, and how many children were in the park at the time? People drive 50 feet away from children all the time. What was all the debris and how badly damaged was the lamp post?

Even though it was a sub contractor the distribution centre who is contracting the driver must have some responsibility for what their driver does.
There will be a Transport Manager somewhere, but if its subcontracted out (eg to GXO or another logistics firm) this is a commercial relationship and the general public isn't entitled to know the commercial arrangements.GasEngineer said:
Don't let them fob you off. Isn't there some sort of HGV association/body that HGV firms are controlled by? You could try them.
Traffic Commissioners license and regulate HGV Fleet Managers. The DVSA is responsible for enforcement against HGV firms. The company is jointly and severally liable for many infringements such as roadworthiness, driver hours, etc but not moving traffic offences.Ultimately it starts with the police, if they're not interested it would be difficult for the other bodies responsible to take any effective action who may well be completely unaware of it anyway.

Pass on the details to the local council, as they/you will be paying for the damage.
Interesting the "do nothing & keep your nose out", type of posts on here. I guess they arnt bothered about where their council tax is wasted.
The do nothing & keep your nose out types will be the ones that damage other peoples cars/property and drive off themselves. Chav rulez.Interesting the "do nothing & keep your nose out", type of posts on here. I guess they arnt bothered about where their council tax is wasted.

Not defending the part about hitting a lamp post then driving off, but if you look at it from the HGV driver's point of view, if a horde of swivel eyed locals start advancing towards him with pitchforks at the ready then I wouldn't blame him for just wanting to get out of there.
Sensible answer would obviously be to offer assistance. A few years ago we had some garden supplies delivered, for some reason it was on the back of large artic. Thankfully I caught him before he turned down our (no-through) road (which is wide to start with then narrows just round a bend) and got him to park up where he was and he used the pump truck to move everything. Once finished I told him the best route to get back off the estate.

Accept that the world is full of bellends and try not to think about it
Then whenever I heard people moaning about the state of the country, remember that time when I was bothered about the tiny stuff and realise 'this is why no one gives a s
t any longer'
The trap you've fallen into is wanting to make the world a better place
