Girlfriend’s 19 plate 1.5tsi 130 Golf went in for a service today and they have advised (independent garage) that there is a leak coming from the rear of the engine, possibly the rear main seal. They have advised it’s only minor currently but to monitor. However if they did fix it due to accessibility they would take the box out etc and also fit a new clutch kit while there, so it gets quite pricey.

I’m quite surprised such a new car has a leak. Does anyone in the know know if it’s common with these engines?

Google brings up a lot of results (and a lot of nonsense). I did read that it could be caused by a failed PCV over pressurising the system and the rear main seal gives way. However she has no codes or any obvious drivability issues which I would expect a failed PCV to cause.

So any advise/experience with this would be appreciated.

Cheers

Not the same car but my 2014 S4 had a minor oil leak from the back of the gearbox oddly, not indicated to me by the local Audi dealer until after the warranty had expired at the next service/MOT. scratchchin

As it wasn't serious, I left it until the next service which when I contacted them, they then wanted to charge me a diagnostic fee on top to diagnose what they had already diagnosed before quoting for the repair.

I took it to an independent specialist who did the service, repair and (DSG) gearbox service (albeit early, mileage-wise but as the gearbox was being opened anyway) for around the same price as Audi quoted for the engine service + gearbox diagnostic.

They told me the reason for the leak was that the rear of the gearbox had clearly been assembled with insufficient gasket/sealant and so was a relatively simple repair, not requiring any major parts - though it obviously involved a fair amount of labour (propshaft off to remove rear of gearbox etc.) and that it most likely had been leaking from new which was annoying because the Audi dealer waited until the first occasion they had the car after the warranty had expired.

The Audi dealer also, on the same, 'end-of-warranty' occasion gave me an MOT advisory that the front shocks were 'misting' with oil and that they would likely need replacing at some point, this was round 8 years ago and the same front shocks are still fitted and no subsequent MOT has advised of any problem.

Obviously a similar repair on yours is more complex due to having to split the engine/gearbox but it might be a similar cause? if so, maybe worth asking for some 'goodwill'?

Cheers there won’t be any good will with a dealer on this car. Let’s put it this way it’s not a Full VW history car from the same dealer hehe - it’s seen it’s fair share of fast fit services over the years.
