I've been wafting around in Lexus LS430s for the last 10 years. Cheap, luxury, reliable motoring. My current one is starting to look it's age, and I feel like treating myself to something a little newer, something I have a love of, and something with as high a driving position as possible.

Budget up £25k max, but that's not a target, if I can satisfy myself for £10 - 15k then brilliant.

Shortlist at the moment:

- X5 40d - F15

- Ranger Rover Sport circa 2018.

I love the RRS, however I am weary of the extra costs, warranty that I would probably buy etc. I'm thinking the X5 will be simpler to live with, more reliable arguably, however I think I will be a little disappointed with the general interior of the BMW compared to what i'm used to.

I keep going back and forth, not sure which way to turn. Any thoughts, or other suggestions that I should consider?

I'd stop the search at the X5. That engine is a lovely thing. Jay Emm on Cars (youtube) has literally just uploaded a video this week with a full review of it - recommend a watch.

You have been spoilt by Japanese reliability... a Range Rover Sport could come as a suprise!

Lexus RX is a good call, there is a LWB version called the RX450hL

How about a Subaru Outback - lovely to drive and reliable...

Neither an X5 or RRS will be anything like as reliable as your Lexus. BMW come below Land Rover, who are mid-table, in the latest Which? maufacturer reliability league table for cars aged 0-4 and 5-9 years old. They score the same for cars 10-15 yrs old. Lexus much better but newer cars not scoring so well...

I'd actually suggest going for the F Pace in 3.0d for your budget, you can get a really nice one for sensible money & you can add Android auto/Carplay for around £430 fitted:

At the lower end of your budget, you'll get a nice QX70 for around 15k, some will have adaptive cruise:

I run a 2018 RRS... lovely car but not cheap to run. £5k/year gets me LR Warranty (2k), LR service (1k), Insurance (1.2k), and a tyre or two (800). (£400/corner!)

And thats before you factor in depreciation! Which has been around £800/month in my ownership.

Warranty is essential IMO, ive just had a 4k warranty claim for new turbo, window controller and cv boot.... last year had 2.5k of cat converter... year before had a similar bill....

That said I love the car, and constantly debate what I would replace it with.

when I write these figures out, its pretty scary!
