Alright then. I've touched on this elsewhere, but thought I'd start a separate thread.

I want a Triumph 900 Scrambler for the summer. It is my intention to customise it a bit, for example with the following:

Fat tank
Respray (as required) solid red or black.
Tank pads
Continental TKC 80 tyres
Leather seat
Engine bars
Slip-ons - Total Triumph
Rack
Bar end mirrors
Tail tidy
Motone headlight brackets
Headlight grille
Rear stand bobbins
Phone bracket

I have been looking for a used recent bike, but as yet nothing has come to light. Lots of nice bikes with one or two of the bits I want, but nothing with multiple components. Or at least also with sensible miles.

It seems to me that they don't depreciate quickly.

So, I am pondering whether I buy something like this. A run-out current model brand new.

or this (which may actually be sold)

or whether to wait and see what the next few months brings to market. My assumption is that, towards Easter, people will start to dig out their bikes and change them.

The brand new one appeals from the standpoint that I will be the only person to have used it and I know the history.

Buying one that is 3-4 years old only seems to save about £1500, which isn't THAT much in the bigger scheme.

Another query - I am a "returning biker" with no NCD. Are those mods ^^^ going to render me uninsurable? They are largely cosmetic.

Any thoughts chaps?

I hate waiting to see what bike comes up for sale as I always feel like I've just missed out on a good one by thinking there would be a better one coming along...

As for insurance, it depends who you're with, Bennetts publish a whole list of mods you don't need to declare as they take it as read that most bikers will fiddle with their bike to an extent. I don't think those mods you mentioned would affect a premium much.

This is another reason to buy a new one, right?

Yes that is nice.

For: Nice tyres, headlight grille, Fox

Against: I'd need to change that exhaust, I'd still want to repaint it, it's expensive.

What worries me: It's a low miles very recent bike in a non Triumph dealer. Having just backed a Fantic with very low miles, I am developing an eye twitch thinking about that one.

The eBay one: Local, reputable dealer, most of what you want, decent price - strong contender

Hmmm yes. Looks expensive. I see that bike as £7300.

I am looking at Honda CRF 300s as we speak. I was quite looking forward to building a 900 slowly over the next few months. If I buy one now I am not sure I will use it if the weather is stty.

Or maybe I could. Then take it apart Easter time and put on the trick bits.

If you could get it for 7 and a half, which you should be able to, then yes, ride now and tinker later, makes sense.

The RH website has some truly 'unique' hogs..

.
There are 2023 bikes available for £7300-7400.

That green one may have gone anyway. They had someone on it when I last spoke to them.

Why change the exhaust? Isnt it a Zard. The one on my Ducati Scrambler sounds brilliant.

In Naples there is a cafe in which works a Pakistani waiter. He has a thumb that looks like that. He is an utter weirdo and took great pleasure in thrusting his sixth finger in our faces to shock us.

It worked. I could never have a Zard twin exhaust.

True story.

This afternoon I have bought this as a base.

It's 2022 and 4.8k miles. FTSH, warranty. It is also from my local Triumph main dealer and, most importantly, ready to collect on Monday.

I am currently thinking I will run it for a couple of months as it is then, once I am happy it is sound, start customising it.

Yes. Quite a good one. Being 31 of January probably helped.

I was torn between this one and a brand new one. The "localness" won the day. But it looks like an older gent's bike so I hope it hasn't become "tight" as some vehicles can be, when they are mollycoddled.

Interested to see what you end up with.

My old new 900 Scrambler back in 2007, should never have sold it.
