I have had a 72 plate model Y Long Range since August last year. I bought it with the sole purpose of doing a 110 mile round trip to work 5 days a week. I didn't want to worry about range or have to drive it gently and it has absolutely delivered on that brief. Really happy with it and feel like it is probably the best way to spend £20-£25k on this sort of car.

That said there are some things I dislike/hate about it.

1.) The ride. I specifically bought a 19" wheeled car for this reason and even still I think the ride is borderline unacceptable sometimes. Perhaps this is exacerbated by the fact the councils that are responsible for the roads I drive on seem unwilling or unable to spend a single penny on fixing potholes. My car is on a new set of OEM fit hankooks, not sure if there are other tyres that make a difference.

2.) The charge port. I find it annoying having to either get my phone out my pocket to unlock the charge port when it's time to leave, I typically do the rear passenger door handle thing for 3 seconds. I feel like with the car being keyless entry via the phone that it should also just unlock the charge port when you get close especially if it has reached charge limit.

3.) Climate on/off. Wish there was just an OFF button available on the main screen rather than having to tap the temperature and then tap what seems to be a very small specific area to get the climate to turn off. I also find the auto defog quite annoying especially when you want to turn the climate off at the same time.

4.) The colour. I usually have a list of colours I wouldn't buy and having not had a white car for a long time I had forgotten how quickly they look dirty especially at this time of year. I think if I was to get another I definitely wouldn't get white (or black!).

5.) Wet handling. I do find that I lack confidence driving the car quickly in the wet compared to some cars I have had before. I find that it takes very little effort to get the car moving around on throttle out of corners/exiting roundabouts when it's wet and find that I have to adjust my driving style a lot more in the wet than other cars I have had. It actually reminds me of when I had an S2000 in that regard. As above it is on new tyres and has been to Tesla for wheel alignment which did improve things but I have been sideways in it several times.

That's all I can think of really. All these things aside I am really very happy with the car and can see myself keeping it for a number of years unless home charging gets more expensive.

If you press and hold on the climate temperature controls it will turn off. Same when it’s off if you tap, it will turn back on.

Not a lot….

  • the lack or realistic competition
  • boring colours
  • lack of CarPlay
  • no Model 2
  • people pushing their political leanings on to me, whilst buying Chinese vehicles
That’s pretty much it.

I have just got a Model 3 dual motor

I test drove a RWD and in the damp it felt very skittish.

The dual motor is fantastic in comparison

I have 19’s and they are fine, with Firestone tyres.

Why do you want to turn climate off?

Ride is terrible on some road surfaces.

More interior rattles than a builders van.

It is one of the early ones though.

I picked up my model 3 Highland on Friday and have done about 400 miles this weekend in the lovely British weather

The auto wipers are crap, the worst ones I’ve ever used, at one point it was raining very heavily and they just didn’t come on

The auto lights don’t stay on all the time when the wipers are on, so the headlights turn on and off randomly and I don’t like driving just on DRL in the rain

The adaptive cruise control is a bit dumb, it lets you undertake cars and has a hissy fit on dual carriageways where there’s cross over points in the central reservation

The autopilot makes the steering wheel feel so hard I don’t like it

The music stays on until you get out and walk away

No adjustable thigh support, but the seats are very good

Coming from a string of VWs so none of these issues existed before, and VW adaptive cruise control really is very good

Love the car apart from these issues though

Mine is AWD, haven't tried a RWD.

There are times when I just don't feel the need to have it on, happy with ambient.

These are all also very true.

I have had it where I have splashed through water before and the whole windscreen is covered, with auto wipers on, nothing. Then have to press the button to get them to do one wipe, madness really.

Active cruise is also pretty rubbish. Came from a Volvo before the Tesla and the active cruise in that was excellent. Holds a gap and accelerates as soon as the car in front does. I find the Tesla fine on slowing down but it is very slow to accelerate when the car in front does. I also find on motorways you change lane to overtake someone and it slows down as you do it defeating the point of the overtake and meaning you have to apply throttle manually.

I have tried the full self drive a few times but I only really trust it on pretty much straight roads with good road markings.

Forgot-

  • auto wipers are crap
  • auto defogging has a mind of its own
Far fewer rattles and far better build and handling than my previous Mercedes.

Yeh, the wipers are a bit crap.

I also dislike the way the car sometimes thinks you're going to crash and intervenes my pulling the steering to pull you away from whatever it thinks you're going to hit. We have a sliproad near use that's not straight. I like to straight line the bends when it's safe to do so, but the car always thinks I'm going to crash and goes nuts.

Don't have a problem with the music staying on until I've closed the doors, last BMW did that too I think so I'm used to it. The sound system it bloody good though, best I've had in a car. I've got the WUB-WUB turned up to max.

Neither did I, thanks BishBosh.

On the suspension, I have the '23, but if I had an earlier one and owned the car, I'd probably just fit the Juniper suspension as a cheap-ish upgrade. The charge port stuff irritates me slightly (have to get phone out to unlock it), but other than that, it just works IMO.

Pull and hold open the rear passenger doorhandle (with door still closed) unlocks/opens the charge port.

I also agree the stereo is great, bass to the max and no rattles, better than my old Audi with Bose.

This doesn't work for me as I think my 2016 Model S is a bit too old, however if you are using the Tesla mobile charger you may be interested in this from the user manual :

The Tesla Mobile Connector Owners Manual said:
With the vehicle unlocked, press and hold the button on the Mobile Connector handle, wait for
the charge port indicator light to turn white, and then pull the Mobile Connector out of the
charge port.
Note: To prevent unauthorized unplugging of the charge cable, the vehicle must be unlocked
or able to recognize a key nearby before you can disconnect the charge cable.
Perhaps a little presumptuous of me as you may not be using the mobile charger... but worth mentioning.

Talking of unlocking the charge port there are buttons you can buy that will transmit an unlocking signal. I’m not sure how good they are or how well they work but might be useful if you have one near your home charger or on a keyring?

I’ve got nothing to do with the seller but an eBay search brings up a few.

In my experience no car is perfect. Today I drove 220 miles in an Audi Q4 e-tron, including a stop a charging stop, and there were far, far more quirks that I didn’t like compared to the 4 years and 72k miles I’ve put on my Model Y.

Push the button on the top of the charge plug - that unlocks it from the car. You have to go to that spot anyway, right? So I'm not understanding how that could be an inconvenience...?

An EV's instant torque means you have to be more judicious with throttle application - especially in the wet.
