Hi Folks,

Can anyone suggest what my S80 is doing?

Driving a couple of miles from home "Coolant" low light came on ordering us to stop. I carried on home, no lift in engine temp, and the level was below min.

I took it to our garage (just a local ) and they couldn't find where it might be leaking from, After topping up level to max have been monitoring it, it has lost a little but not as much as first time. Took it back a second time, and they said it has a small amount of crystals near water pump, but so small as insignificant.

They have been really good and not charged me for their time which is really good, they have told me to "monitor" it until a further loss.

Can anyone suggest what could be the issue if they have had a similar problem?

This car is in decent nick, with a full service history and under 50k miles

Your post reminded me of this thread: V40 Low coolant level warning as it is the same engine. Hopefully not as serious however!

Possible other things might be a hairline crack in the header tank that might not be apparent when cold. Depending on how quick the level goes down, might be worth getting a pressure test done to see if there are any leaks when the system is pressurised.

You beat me to it.

The OP's engine is certainly in the right ball-park for the block issue that mine suffered.

OP, what is your mileage?

As per if you read the linked post it starts with a few small gulps of coolant & the system is generally pressurised by this, so when you open the expansion bottle cap to top up, the level generally comes back 1/2 way towards where it should be.

I think mine did the above 5 times on 5 separate (all over 2 hour) journeys and then it opened up more, took a massive gulp of coolant, then some more until the level dropped sufficiently & it overheated.

But at all times if I drove for under 1 hour it was 100% fine.

Even after it overheated, with a LOT of mechanical sympathy & bleeding I could drive it over 2 hours but needed to constantly check the temperature and drive accordingly.

ETA.
Sorry, I meant to say, aside of that good luck OP, I hope your luck is better than mine.
