Another Plumbing Problem....
Discussion
Took delivery of a new gas cooker, Belling 8 hob affair with elec oven.
Plumber came in today (who I know) and said it needed a 28mm gas feed, existing feed of 15mm not sufficient.
Contacted Belling, who said they would reccommend a 15mm feed, up to 12m away from gas supply, with a max of 6 No 90 degree bends in the pipework.
Went back to plumber with this info, who said the manufacturer of the cooker had no idea what they were talking about and stood by his asessment of a 28mm feed.... This means removing the lino flooring, chipboard flooring etc etc etc just to get the new feed in to the required position.
Who do I believe? The plumber or the manufacturer of the cooker?
BTW, the plumber is Corgi reg, but only been doing this for 3 months without much experience.

I thought most domestic supplies were only 22mm from the meter so 28mm is going to be way over the top. Did Belling not supply installation instructions, or can you get them to send you some. I would go with the manufacturer but you can't make the man fit something he doesn't want to.
My 85,000 btu boiler is 22mm from the meter about 4m away and the 1.5m is 15mm so that is one hell of a hob!

In case its any help, we've recently had a similar oven fitted (Belling dual fuel but with 5 rings, not 8 - although the middle one is a bit of a monster!). Its on 15mm piping and I would guess at a minimum of 8 90° bends, but only approx 5m from the supply.
With all the burners on full chat its actually uncomfortably hot in the room...

would suggest you get a second opinion from another plumber.
am having an extension built at the moment which meant moving the gas supply to a new location for a new hob.
one plumber (corgi registered) said I could not chase the wall and hide the pipe said regulations state all gas pipes must be visible.
second plumber said he was talking bollox.

1st plumber says stuff.
Manufacturer contradicts it.
2nd plumber says 1st plumber is wrong.
But what if the 1st guy is right, he's fresh out of plumbing/gas school so may be more up to date on the regs.
Why not just look up the actual regs themselves and find out for sure?
I have had a couple of occassions recently where I have shown planners to be wrong, because they were thinking of their own local 'wish list' or own personal interpretation/opinion rather than what the actual regs said definitively.

The problem with this question is that you can't give a pipesize for the appliance without knowing how far it is from the meter and what other appliances are tee'd off the pipe. The pressure drop is the only thing that is regulated (no pun intended) by Corgi/BS Regulations. We fit gas hobs (4 burners)on no smaller pipework than 15mm purely for the reason that if it won't meet the regulations we'd have to rip it out and start again. I've seen hobs fitted with 8mm. If the property has one of these status symbol 'Range' type cookers we run 22mm, but bear in mind that as they are free standing and require a flexible hose we reduce to 1/2" BSP/15mm at the appliance.

I know what you're really referring to, but couldn't help laughing at a vision of gas pipes running exposed across the kitchen floor!
er myself.
