I subscribe to Magneto magazine. The main feature in the new issue, #29, is The Top 50 Motor Sport Liveries. I expect everyone has their own favourite, but I also reckon you could guess what came out top, the only doubt being which kind of car they would pick as the illustration. It got me thinking as to what current livery, of a car in any kind of sport, stands out nowadays.

When Lotus unveiled the black and gold JPS, not the winner, it was national news both in non-specialist papers and on TV. I remember a feeling of excitement when I first read of it, and then to see it live, driving at speed on circuits, looking even better in the metal, and winning; what could be better?

It might add to the visibility of F1 if one of the 11 teams did something so startling that it got on national news. There would be no consensus as to which is best currently. Probably.

Magneto is subscription only. Best graphics of any current motoring magazine, and with precise and readable copy. Even the adverts are spectacular.

Gulf is done fa too much and therefore makes it very boring.. Rothmans worked well on some cars, not on others. Numerous versions, the Vatanen Mk2 Escort one was horrible the Manta 400 one was superb!!

Martini looked far better on 935's than anything else, and actually the better Lancia livery was Totip!! And t he 89 red Integrale topped them all!!

One of my favourite livery designs is the red and black Yokohama Advan design, works on most things.

Vailant Porsche 917, 935 is a banger.

New Man and Shell were better 962 liveries. As was Miller and Lowenbrau.

Later faves were the Toyota GTOne, Castrol Toyota always seems to work.

That is how you do it. But sadly , Stevie Wonder has again been tasked with designing this year's crop of F1 car liveries .Only the Audi shows a little class and most are incoherent messes .

The only one in the modern age to count in my opinion. Genuinely front and back page news at the time and stunning with it.

Meh.

One of the forgotten heroes of this genre....

Only because it translated so well on to the road car....

Great livery, utterly dodgy bloke as was Chapman actually!!

Liveries were better optimised back then, smarter, cleaner. F1 cars look awful with nothing on them, so adding 50 sponsors and their little patch of colour makes most single seater liveries now look a mess, patchy and designed by a child, which they seem to be.

It was easier for them when overall budgets were much smaller so you could have just one major sponsor and a cohesive colour scheme. Much harder to do that when you need a multitude of sponsors to meet your $200m budget, each with their own colour palette.

I am going to add Candy Toleman to this list, 1982 in particular, I was too young to really appreciate what they did sadly, but now you can look back and basically see a Hispania F1 team getting points and pushing two or three great drivers on to fabulous careers

And for me my favourite ever race car the March 792 in ICI livery of Derek Daly and Stephen Soth, great cars, great days

I was going to include that in my original post but I was concerned that, when I mentioned others in the same post, and praise JPS, Blib might ban me.

Brabhams were always beautifully prepared and often one of the best on the grid. They took pains to make their colours fit their cars.

This Ligier art car often gets a (justifiable) mention when it comes to cool liveries :

.

Whilst back at LM fans of “Spike” the LMP2 dinosaur may not realise there was a predecessor:

The “reptile” Venturi LM 600 from 1994 :

The Honda RA107 “earth car”. Marmite maybe.

It was sat outside Goodwood House at the FoS press preview one year. The prominent team owner I was talking to glanced over at it and suggested the livery was defined by someone vomiting over it…

Yes, a great shout.

Finally, because I’m Welsh * and hopelessly biased :

(* OK the rugby wasn’t too clever today but Elfyn Evans did win Rally Sweden).
