Der Vaterwagen (2018 E350d Estate)
Discussion
After a lot of deliberation and annoyance to Mrs BS of the last number of weeks my trusty 2010 BMW F11 (520d Estate) has now departed the scene after 8 years of ownership replaced with a 2018 S213 E350d.

The 520d has served me well, as I'm hoping the E350d will.
It has been used a Clerk of Course car at the motorsport events I attend, and usually gets filled with officials / marshals and general personnel transport at events. Sometimes getting the opportunity to make haste to incidents which is always filled with trepidation.. not knowing what you are rushing towards.

Yesterday I drove and picked up its replacement.

It is such a nice place to sit.
Is it a risk, yes of course it is, they're well known for oil cooler seals failing, but then what isn't a risk?
Today is a day for getting out my clay bar and giving it a good bodywork clean, can't beat a bit of clay bar action, once the frost has gone !

Nice! That's Harewood hillclimb if im not mistaken?
These are interesting with the newer body but older v6 diesel rather than inline 6 as in the 400d.
Oil cooler seals are expensive but not terminal / dangerous, so not worth overly worrying.
The Om642 is well proven now. Lots of other niggles with them but robust otherwise. Worth having a read up and working through them if you haven't already. Particularly seals for the turbo / intake system. It can make a big difference to performance fixing all the minor boost leaks.
I fancy one of these to replace my 211 one day.

I think I recognise the backdrop for the E350 dealer pics....another hillclimb site - Chateau Impney. My Dad in his younger days with the Bromsgrove and District Car Club used the driveway and the current owners of the Chateau did a couple of annual events recently.
I've a CLS 350 CDI and it's a great engine - I've had mine nearly 5 yrs and c.60k miles and it just "wafts" along. It's just about to see usage go up to c 25k miles a year again wi5h a change in job.
I looked at a 520D and the stories of engine issues made me stop and think. A dealer with a 520D Tourer and a 250 CLS Shooting Brake drew my attention (and a 350 was the same £s). Undoubtedly the E Estate is the infinity more practical car, but the CLS has a greater road presence IMO. Nice E (and colour)

I wondered about a later i6 E350d, but there is also attributed cam lifter woes associated with with engine, and they were more money !These are interesting with the newer body but older v6 diesel rather than inline 6 as in the 400d.

Indeed Chateau impney Hillclimb of old, the hotel had scaffolding around it and looked in a sad way. 520D engine issues - it's odd isn't it, you never hear good news with regards to stuff like this, my 520D had 105K on it and never missed a beat. Didn't use any fluids, did 50mpg all day long. My only issue was a slightly rough gearbox that was addressed with a gearbox filter and oil change we did at 94k.
Great choice. I had that engine in my E320 CDI 2007 and sold it recently with 210k miles in it. Unless it was replaced before I bought it then it was still on its original oil cooler seals. The newer engines had updated seals so you should be fine.
As mentioned they like to use turbo seals but lots of DIY videos of how to replace them and OEM ones are cheap. DIY oil and filter changes are a doddle too.
You’ll love the power and more civilised sound of this V6 compared to the BMW 2.0. I had that engine in a 2015 320d and the only thing I didn’t like was its coarseness.
What are your first impressions and any outings planned?

The BMW diesel engines have a reputation, but if you've owned from new/nearly new and followed the servicing regime or even better done interim oil and kept an eye on the chains, I'm sure they're great.520D engine issues - it's odd isn't it, you never hear good news with regards to stuff like this, my 520D had 105K on it and never missed a beat. My CLS has had a broken front spring (heavy engine/cr4p roads) and also had an issue with the self/levelling rear suspension (a broken wire) but they can be problematic with water ingress on the CLS as the plastic box that covers it has a foam filler that absorbs the water and corrodes the pump. My latest update is a wheel speed sensor ring has failed (the part is c.£32 from MB).
My CLS thread details what it has been like running a 2014 car (one early job was an oil leak in the V of the engine) and as usual the standard of service even with specialists can be variable - mine now goes to a local garage for most things at £60/hr labour costs and they're not VAT registered. I am struggling with what I might in the future replace it with without spending lots of money (we have an 300 CDi ML as well).

The 520d was the only 4 potter I'd had in decades. C32 AMG to a BMW F10 530d, to a F11 520d, back to a 6 !As mentioned they like to use turbo seals but lots of DIY videos of how to replace them and OEM ones are cheap. DIY oil and filter changes are a doddle too.

First impressions - how well it rode on our cr@p Cheshire roads, it has a reasonable amount of punch too. Very torquey. Lovely place to sit, I must be getting old !
Planned - Spa Classic in May :-)

Hard to beat a 6+ cylinder engine especially if it s diesel. I ve a V6 diesel XJ, i6 petrol SL320 and V8 SL55. All have their own voice. I know diesels get a bad rap for sound but I do like them if 6 cylinder, V8 better still.
I feel you ll enjoy owning this motor. Driving to Spa will be waftastic
