In the real world... the MK1 GT3 is probably a bit slower due to the fact that you probably could not exploit its fullest on all road surfaces.

On the track I would like to think the GT3 would have a 997 S... but in reality it would be pretty close.

As for Terminal Velocity... Perhaps the 997 due to lower drag co-efficient...?????

had a dise with a 997s other day.. he seemed to have more low down power from low revs.. but when mine kicked in at 6000 rpm i started to pull away.. i would say after 100mph car would pull a fair bit away....!!!!the 997 was faster off the lights.. my mk1 needs to be reved hard to get going....

i dunno

driven both but not back to back, and they seemed very similar pace-wise

was v impressed with the S

it has a lot of character as well (like the GT3 does), quite surprising

GT3 looks more hardcore tho'

i think the n'ring lap times are very similar....

997 may be just as fast but it's still not got the gt3's presence, nor does it sound anything like as good at 6000+rpm

Don't know how much faster, but my 911 996 turbo with a Techart T3 kit pushes 442kws - thats 600hp. good for 0 - 100kph in a easy 3.8 seconds, 0-160kph in 7.8 seconds, 0-200kph in 12 seconds and that was on a slight uphill gradient! and tops out at 325kph. It makes the GT2 Turbo look tame.

My Tubi'd 997S sounds better than Manu's GT3 MKII and thats what he said. You could of course put a Tubi on a GT3 and that would sort that problem.

As for which is faster a 997S with -20mm and LSD is as fast around the ring as a Mk1 GT3.

However after being out in Manu's MKII at the weekend his car definitely had that little special extra. I think it is the step in power at 6000rpm or the rawness of his car but it 'feels' faster. He has of course got racing cats etc etc so maybe that is why it felt better.

Oh and his Speed Yellow combo with Black wheels is absolutely jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

Thats one of the funniest posts i have ever seen.

In terms of 997 S against the Mk1 GT3. I would have the thought that the GT3 could definetely hold its own very well. Surely the GT3 is lighter, and of course that engine...

Either way, they are both pretty rapid...But i know which one i would prefer to take round the NS, and it would be the Gt3 everytime

all the best

The GT3 MK1 was the first Porsche production road car to lap the ring in under 8 mins. In fact it was supposidly the first production road car (porsche or not) to lap in under 8mins. 7.56 to be precise, in the days when porsche released Walter Rohls official times. I know the standard 997 laps in the region of 8.14, but not too sure what the S does. Don't believe it is 7.56 though. Fairly sure a mk1 still has the edge.

I found reference to a 997S with the -20mm sports suspension doing it in 7.59 secs. Normal 997S is 8.02 or something.

3 seconds adrift over 13 miles isn't too tardy. So the GT3 has the smallest edge imaginable... until the 997 GT3 comes out

At the end of the day, they are probably very very close on track & road. Where they differ is how they go about their respective jobs.
The 997S very clinical, a little boring as it does everything very well. The GT3 quite raw, every journey is an event & you drive it rather than it drives you.
I guarentee you would remember many more journerys in the GT3 than you would in the 997 S, great car as it is, plus you will save £20k going for the GT3 which you can invest in really learning how to drive it.

Now that is a good point hence I remember bombing round in the MkII GT3 more than my 997S at the weekend.
