Horny model railway stuff

Morning all,

I recently rediscovered my old model railway kit. It’s not been used for ages and we’re in the process of downsizing the house and need to have a serious cull of attics items!

I will be selling it all but have a question for the enthusiasts. Is a job lot a good plan or should I piece it out? I don’t have original boxes.

There is a lot of rolling stock and I have the Intercity 125 HST set which i remember being very cool as it lit up!

Several other locomotives including a big green Mammoth.

I’m guessing eBay is my friend here?

I've had many a wk over a Hornby Dublo Crepello Deltic, and Trix Swindon Trans Pennine five car units in the 1960's.

When I had to sell my late father in laws model railway ebay was the best. I batched track into various types (say a complete circle, 4x straights etc). Locos I sold individually. Carriages and wagons I sold in groups (4 coal wagons, 2 carriages etc).

Obviously if you have something like a 125 then that will sell as a set.

Alternatively get one of the hobby magazines and send a list off to the collection buyers who advertise if you want the whole lot gone in one go.

Ebay seems increasingly a massive pain in the arse. I'd put it on Facebook Marketplace; you'll still be pestered by idiots offering you 50p and a broken X-box but there's no danger of Paypal or Ebay deciding to give the purchaser a refund.

Not having sold on ebay for a few years I have recently re started selling stuff. It's all very simple, Paypal hasn't been an issue for years and you don't pay any fees.

I've sold a fair bit of model stuff on eBay over the years. Mainly nearly-new diecast car models or refurbished Dinkys - generally they sell well and the feedback from buyers is sensible/positive. However a few Hornby locos have come my way & have duly sold on eBay with mixed results. The buyers seem difficult to please, some stating "not as described" or other dissatisfaction. Maybe I've just been unlucky & its down to me for straying from my (automobile) comfort zone.

Hornby sells well via provincial auction houses - go onto: easyliveauction.com and you will almost certainly find an auction house local to you (there are several dedicated "toy" auctioneers).

OK you're probably looking at 20% commission but balance this up against a very high chance of a sale, a "clean" deal with no comeback & no postal hassles.

I've got a Hornby APT set and a collection of 3 locos & rolling stock up for auction in Battle, Sussex next week. I'll let you know how I get on.

Incidentally this Intercity (225) set is up for auction tomorrow - might give you a bit of a steer on price/sellability.

Mamod, Mallard or ...

You will get more by selling separates or a boxed sets. Takes more effort/time of course which may be at a premium when house moving.
Ebay or facebook marketplace.
Ebay searching for sold items is good for estimating values /grandmother eggsucking risk.
