Car mat factories in the U.K.
Discussion
Back in 1991 I worked for the Walk Off Mats Group in Leighton Buzzard. They manufactured rubber backed entrance matting for Initial and other laundry companies, but also had a sideline in car mats made to order. The process was large format ovens laying the textile into hot rubber under pressure, although a PVC alternative also existed (less flexible).
They were sold off to a massive Dutch competitor, who in turn succumbed to a US giant.
But today when I shop in Dunelm there is a display of washable entrance mats 'Made in UK' much like what we used to make. Could be useful for you?
If your contact wants to start from scratch, that's exactly what Walk Off did all those years ago - it was still family owned when I knew it and the founder was very much involved in manufacturing improvements. They even owned their own rubber mill in Manchester and imported bales of raw stuff for calendaring on site, complete with the odd exotic spider inside.
