I'm going up to Scotland next weekend and would like to know the usual hangouts for Scamera vans and Police on the M6 past Lancaster and the A74 in Scotland. Can anyone help?

Cumbria - quite often a scamera van on the M6 somewhere, Penrith-Carlisle.

M74, Scamera van almost always on an overhead bridge between Gretna and Johnstonbridge, usually on one of the long straights.

Other than that, YMMV - occasional unmarked vehicles.

If you're observant then there's no reason you can't make progress on the A74(M); the best "no fee" road in Britain by a country mile.

I've driven it more times than I can remember, and I'll tell you what you should look out for:

1) Motorway overbridges. Absolutely the favourite haunt of Dumfries & Galloway scamera vans. Always but always look as far ahead as you can. If you see a shape stopped on top of the bridge then easy on the gas. Good chance it'll be one of them.

2) Junctions. At virtually every junction you'll come across the VASCAR marks on the road (the little white marks across the carriageways). The first one tends to be situated just when your car becomes visible from the motorway on-ramp. You should always adjust your speed when passing junctions, as logic dictates it is the place where a) traffic joins the motorway, and b) it's where the police will be lurking.

3) Unmarked cars. Difficult to spot. I will say, though, that you should look out for Mercedes cars with suspicious looking ariels! Seriously, you'll just have to keep an eye on shiney cars in the nearside lane travelling at/about the speed limit.

Happy motoring...

M6 jct 36-40, M74 anywhere now that South Lanarkshire Safety Scameras are in on the action too. It used to be so much fun driving up to Glasgow, now its set the cruise to 75 and fall asleep, instead of 110-120 that I used to do. Remember by the time you observe them on the bridge, its likely that you will have been got.

Thanks to all for the replies. As I see it, the lighter volume of traffic going to Scotland makes the job of catching speeding motorists so much easier for Plod & Co
