Hi all, I think that I have settled on getting a Skoda superb estate and I would value your advice on this.

I am open to other cars - need to have a large cargo area, automatic and cheap to run and insure so open to advice on this

What do you all think of this:

I love Superbs especially this age in estate version. Should be easy to maintain as the drivetrain is in 1000’s of cars as for reliability it should be ok but depends on luck of the draw really. I would want to know more about the write off before even thinking about taking it further.

Massive fan of the Superb.

I bought a 2014 (superb ii) 2.0 Diesel hatch (not 4x4) in November as a stop gap as I needed a car in a hurry.

(It was 2 owners from new, FSH, just serviced and MOT's then the owner hit a Deer - so bumper was a bit cracked. insurance wanted to write it off, so I bought if off him for £1000) Had 4 new winter tyres, immaculate interior and 162000 miles on the clock

Since November I've done over 10,000 miles and nothing has gone wrong. Its fast (enough) on Scottish A roads. Big, safe, economical (Averaging 52.6 mpg) and I'm going to keep it until it falls apart - I've put the money I was going to spend on a fancy car into precious metals which are holding their value, and increasing, much better than a car!

Shedding at its best!

The one you're looking at is a Superb i.

DSG box - make sure it's been serviced.

It's priced too high - Max for this age id expect around the £4k mark. Even with the low mileage on this one.

Have a look on the "Skoda Superb Owners Club GB" FB page. They come up quite often for sale and recently youd get newer for less ...

Doing a Vehicle Score on the one you are looking at:

Last change of owners October 2025 - why selling so soon after buying / ? trader

MOT due 12th April - last tested at 80,451 miles - so not done much this year? why

At that price id expect a full 12 months MOT.
With only 1 month MOT remaining its worth £3k at the most

That’s all very useful info from you all thanks and very detailed.
I’m struggling to find the right car and need one asap.

There is this one but the trader couldn’t give me any details about it as ‘I’ve got 40 cars on my lot, I can’t know everything about all of them!”

Might have to go for a Octavia over a Superb give what’s available and I need a car now!

My advice:

By from a private seller. Buy on history and length of MOT if you need a car now. Worth shopping around within 50 miles from home ish, there's usually something with a decent bit of history for sale.

I like to chat to the prev. owner, and have a reasonable reason for sale. Old cars from traders are usually in a lot for a reason and for that reason I avoid.

Thank you, I've been texting the owner and he seems very nice, sent me more photos and SH etc

I really like these 2 with the 4x4 being my favourite and it's close to me

Or should I look for an old merc or volvo estate? As reliable as possible and automatic must have cruise control,.

Any advice or links would be most appreciated cheers

Ask him to put it through an MOT. If it has 12M on it - make him an offer. If it fails - walk!

If he refuses - walk!

I think any seller who puts "v car" rather than "this car is CAT n" or "car was previously and insurance write off" is trying not to make it clear but also covering their back by vaguely mentioning it.

I'd run a check like a car vertical see if you can find anything further about the accident, it could have happend last year when car was low ISH value and repaired really well, it could have happened at a year old causing £10k damage and been badly repaired. You really need to know the details, also note that it will be harder to sell when you come to sell on too

Yep I was planning on doing that thanks.
It’s just the price that I need to barter with but it is the 4x4 version which I can’t find among of at all with such a high spec.

I know it’s basically the same as an A4/6, VW Passat etc so have been looking at those but there’s something about that Skoda that just seems right to me

Petrol 4x4 owner, the boot is huge, rear legroom is huge, running one on a budget is a no.

You need to be looking for DSG every 40k, Haldex every 40k/3 years, if someone really loved it then front and rear diff oils. Your looking for cambelt, if not budget for one, zero warning lights, ideally serviced every 10k, decent matching tyres.

Would I buy another, no, should I have kept my Mondeo, probably. Can I find anything to replace it with - not yet. Possibly a V90 cross county possibly a Transit van.

It looks good, but a previously written off car from a driveway traderprivate seller on Facebook in Birmingham isn't something I would personally entertain at any price.

A proper DSG and Haldex service are not exactly budget busting procedures anymore. As an aside, I’d never leave a Gen 5 Haldex for the full 40k miles either, we do it every 20k.

Its a Cat S.

Also, its price £5750 is correct IF IT WERE A CLEAN CAR but with the Cat S marker on it, should be adjusted down significantly (I'd suggest 40%, others may vary).
