I'm about to start the slippery slide into retirement, dropping to three days a week in April, with a view to zero days/week within a year or so.

With this in mind, my i4 (G26) is fine for the commute but rather lacks the soul of a proper motor for high days and holidays.
I need some V8 goodness to share the driveway. No diesel.

Doesn't need to be super fast/sporty, more comfy and purposeful.
Can't be expensive - £20-30k tops.
Not too old, c. 2010+.

  • Range Rover L322/L405
  • Jaguar F-Pace
Not sure why JLR is topping my list thus far, I'm well aware of their reputation but it's an itch that need scratching. Probably.
Any reason to buy one over another that'll help me decide?

I have an i4 M50 for the daily grind and my weekend antidote to that is a 2012 XKR Convertible. Would highly recommend, put it in dynamic and it sounds lovely.

Also easy to get apple car play etc added of you wish.

If you're keeping the i4 the RR and F Pace seem pointless. I'd be looking for something small and sporty.

XKR is the only sensible option here really. The RR is a fine thing but not special enough for a high days and holidays motor.

Forget the F Pace, look at the F Type...

All I'd say is take your time to decide. And I hope it's not your last hurrah in any case.

If I was to do a last hurrah, it'd be a Gallardo or 430. The cars you listed are after the last hurrah, surely? biggrin

For a high days and holidays car, a Maserati or Aston Martin should be on the list of things to look at. A few years ago, I'd also have suggested a TVR, but they are all a bit too old now.

Both would have the capability to go expensively wrong, but if you've got another car to use day to day, isn't that just part of the fun of having an interesting car?

Alternatively if you want something with a V8 that is fun, a bit different and (relatively) unlikely to go wrong, a Lexus RC F or IS F would fit the bill.

2007 isn't far off 2010.

I know it's not a V8 but...

Or perhaps a V8 Vantage?

Is a 5.0 Mustang in that price range? Oh yes it is!

Surely a contender for a proper V8 with real character smile

Decent idea. Shouldn't throw up any killer bills and practical enough for everyday use.

If you go this route , get an SVR 5.0 ..and be a true petrolhead ....................on no account buy a 2.0 with an ingenium engine ............or Cadburys engine , worst engine ever installed in a car that goes for JLR land rover Evoque etc

wife had one on its third engine after 60k .

Good shout. I remember reading about the Mustang Bullitt when it came out a few years ago and thought it was interesting but looked a bit 'meh' in the article. Then I saw one parked outside a fancy country hotel last year and it was absolutely gorgeous in the flesh! High on my theoretical want list now!

I should’ve said, when the i4 goes, it’ll be replaced with F-type R but that’s probably a year or more away.

Not keen on the German options, I’ve been BMW and Porsche the last couple of decades, and decidedly not a Mercedes person.

Balls only regular size, so AM & Maserati not on list. Already scratched the TVR itch with my Griffith years ago.

The Lexus RC-F looks good, but sadly rather above budget.

I'd be going Maserati Granturismo and I think the one linked looks fab especially as it's not white, silver or black as 90% of Gran Turismo's are.

Might be a bit risky but how about a Bentley Continental?

We're just about to sell a 66 Plate L405 at the bottom of your budget. FLRSH. If you decide to go that way, drop me a line.

P.S. The last hurrah bit is as much about Jaguar as it is about me.
I doubt there'll be many 5.0l V8s in their future...
