Me again

Each time I start up XP, I get an error message saying that Microsoft Powerpoint has to close and do I wish to send an error report online. The thing is, Powerpoint is not in my startup folder, and neither is it in the list of startup processes. I checked the startup process list using Microsoft Anti Spyware and with WinPatrol, neither of them list Powerpoint. I also checked my registry, and again Powerpoint is not listed. No other Office apps are listed either. So why is powerpoint trying to start up, and how do I stop it?

Can I step through the startup processes one at a time, and thereby detect which process is causing the error to pop up?

thanks!!

If you run 'msconfig' it should show you what's trying to start powerpoint..... Either the .exe itself, or a .ppt/.pps file.

Already looked in msconfig, there's nothing at all in the startup tab that has anything to do with Powerpoint. Most odd. The only thing that has recently been added to the list is Google Desktop, could that be related?

thanks

Try using Autoruns from SysInternals. It's very thorough in finding out what is started when you boot.

Update - I have found the offending startup process, by trial and error. It's opware32.exe and is part of a package called Omnipage (an OCR program I think) that came with my Canon scanner. When it loads, it seems to launch winword, excel and powerpnt executables, but invisibly, i.e. you can see the processes running but the applications themselves do not open.

Any ideas why this process is starting up office apps in the background?

Anyway, for now I have disabled it using msconfig and I no longer get the error message.

It's to preload the Office DLLs to appear to give better startup times - presumably for when you switch from scanning to actually using the scanned images in Office.
