Am I really going to have to blindly gamble ordering from one of the online box mattress places and return if it’s not right? It seems as though there are a small number of options to try in person now and a bewildering array of overall options available. The marketing speak is ridiculous in the mattress world now.
I’m a side sleeper.
I have been considering an Origin mattress and maybe a topper. Do I just order it to try and go through returns and trying something else if it doesn’t work?

I've also found the bed base matters a lot too. I bought an Otty mattress but a cheap double bed base off ebay and now it's bowing where I normally sleep which affects the mattress. Going to look into a decent Ottoman base instead to get some storage. The Otty is OK but I can sleep anywhere.

IMHO a topper is just another layer to subside. The option to try a mattress free for 100 days etc sounds much more preferable than buying one in a shop, where if you don't like it, tough luck. Just because it feels nice in the shop doesn't mean it will still feel nice 100 days later.Simpo Two said:

IMHO a topper is just another layer to subside. The option to try a mattress free for 100 days etc sounds much more preferable than buying one in a shop, where if you don't like it, tough luck. Side sleeper here too. Mattresses are always a gamble in my view - whether you buy online or in a shop. We spent 3 months trying to various types and ended up ‘risking’ a Tempur, albeit knowing we could exchange if required. Glad we kept that option as although it’s supremely comfortable for both of us, it retains heat like nothing else I’ve slept on. We knew this could be an issue, so duly exchanged and a new Harrison Spinks jobbie arrives in its place next week.

Last year we purchased a Simba Hybrid Luxe mattress, it wasn't exactly cheap but we got a good deal using blue light card and its very good - cant complain at all
We're both side sleepers and find it really comfortable, we like a firm mattress, this is sold as medium,we also rotate it once a month
As a bonus, we also received their Hybrid 3-in-1 duvet, 2xHybrid pillows and mattress protector - the duvet and pillows are wonderful

Also side sleepers, very much sympathise. Last year, we decided to replace our NaturalMat mattress (which is latex, coir, and wool) and during 2025 we tried:
Emma Thermosync (horrible foamy BIAB, many people like them, but not for us, refunded, eventually)
JL Hypnos Luxury Ortho No3 (beautifully comfortable & supportive, but collapsed after 11 days, returned)
Hypnos Cotton Origins 6 (way too soft, and manufacturing defect, returned)
Hypnos 'Majesty Sublime' (damaged during delivery, no longer stocked, refunded)
Hypnos Orthos Support 8 (way too firm, suspect extra firm mislabelled, retailer very kindly agreed to exchange)
and finally
Hypnos Cotton Origins 8, which we've now had about four months and - so far - is perfect (for us), and holding up very well.
You might gather from this that Hypnos have some serious QC issues, and you'd be right, and they're certainly nothing like the quality they used to be, but we stuck with it because a) we couldn't get on with foamy BIABS, having tried a few in shops and the Emma at home; b) we tried - in shops - a whole lot of other 'traditional' mattresses (vispring, harrison spinks, etc etc) and didn't like any of them.
Hypnos do have their own 'feel' which - when they do get it right - is a really good blend of support and comfort. And they have support right to the edges so you get more useable space. And they generally smell nice. Oh, and try their bobbly latex pillows too, they're really good.
In my opinion, ***which is probably useless because everyone's different***: ViSpring, at least until you get to the Tiara which is £££, feel 'slabby' and you tend to roll off the edges (we have a ViSpring Herald something in the guest room and it's sort of OK, but 'slabby' for sure). Harrison Spinks tend toward the 'saggy' feel, no matter what the price point (and what's the deal with the millions of tiny springs?).
All that said, if anything goes wrong with this Hypnos, we'll go elsewhere. Specifically Duxiana which evidently is a niche choice but we tried it repeatedly and loved it (the base model, the others are more £££ and less comfortable). Problem is even the base model is a lot of money, so we figured we'd give Hypnos one last go first... and so far, it's been OK. YMM, of course, V.

I too have been looking for a bed & mattress for the last few months... the options are bewildering.
I'm happy to 'invest' in a decade's worth of comfort, but some of the prices are eyewatering.
I've almost decided on a naturalmat mattress, but I'm concerned that it's at the top of my price range, and such an unknown. Plus, they only exchange, not refund.

Mattresses are nightmare things to buy, you just don t know if it s going to be any good until you ve had it for a while. I hate buying them. Plus the usual brands seem to rename the same mattress at different shops making comparisons difficult
We currently have a Hypnos but the best for value was a Signature 3000 mattress from Happy Beds, very comfortable for not a lot of £

You'll have seen in my rambling post above that we had a naturalmat until last year.I'm happy to 'invest' in a decade's worth of comfort, but some of the prices are eyewatering.

We had the "Cashmere" one, supposedly softer than the "Lambswool" you linked to, and even so it was very, very, firm. We added their "tremendous" topper, which made it much better - in fact I was OK with it, but my wife never really found it comfortable and so after 6 years we decided to replace it. Very best of luck with whatever you go for.
I'm not sure if we were sucked into the hype but 5 months ago we bought a Origins Pocket 1500 - King Size from John Ryan by design for £1200. I mean their website seems spot on, we discussed our weight etc with an advisor and were advised a medium would suit. Reviews etc seemed great.
Within a few months, despite turning it as instructed the dips were becoming ridiculous. I now feel like I'm sleeping in a bowl and with a dodgy back its pretty grim.
Anyway I contacted them and straight off they offered a no quibble refund and to collect it. Absolutely brilliant in that respect but I wonder why, are they aware of an issue, they didn't even want pics, didn't ask anything - just have a refund.
Now we need to start the whole search again.
Budget is around £1500.

We have an Eve premium hybrid and, after just over two years there is zero sign of any dips or sagging. I find it really comfortable as a side sleeper. 200 night trial. In the first 40 days return is free, after that they ask for a contribution to collection costs.

However i left it far too long to do anything about it, and kidded myself into thinking it will get comfier soon (it never has!). We went with an Artisan Naturals, king size medium firmness (recommended by them based on our sizes & that I am a ‘hot’ side sleeper). We managed to make it slightly comfier with the use of a panda mattress topper.
It is hugely deep & heavy, no doubt very well made but I just could not recommend one!

It's without doubt the worst mattress we've ever had. I was similar thinking it might fix itself if we flip it enough but the ridge between us just seems to get bigger. I thought these people were specialists and am surprised they're turning out what is effectively a dodgy product in this case. They made mention it was past the 60 day something or other but as goodwill 'just have a refund' . My guess is they've had an issue with recent production, or it could even be the way they operate. We've got a John Ryan mattress, not sure of the model. Had it 10 years, it is a superking so is 2 zip up singles to make it manageable due to the weight.It is still lovely and comfortable and I hardly ever bother turning it over or around. Very few fancy hotels have had a better bed than mine, although it is obviously personal preference. Sounds like you had a Friday afternoon special or something, unless the quality has gone through the floor in the last few years. I've just looked at their website and they look to be cheaper than I paid 10 years ago so maybe costs have been cut?
