Well, that explains the smell...

It climbed in via the air intake. It probably either left the same way or the motor ingested it and spat it into the DPF/cats (delete as applicable).
Cabin air filter
The slots in the scuttle seem far to small to allow rodent entry.
Have you checked the blower motor?
Yeah, been here, when the kids finished using the C1 it got turned into a motorised rodent cage.
It was in the filter, the blower motor, the ducts and everywhere.
Had to remove the dash, all the HVAC and disinfect it so it didn’t smell of Ammonia. Even after all that it had a twang when it had been left.
To add injury to insult, cut my hand on the metal dash frame and had to go casualty for a Tetanus shot, blood and mouse germs don’t go together.
Good luck !

Thanks! Cabin filter replaced. and there was a lot of vile dark brown liquor in the flap that secures the filter. Now all cleaned out.I'm hoping we can avoid taking the dash out. Did about 50 miles in the car today (before changing the filter!) and the pong was gradually fading.
Looks like the entry point is actually behind the battery, and there's no rodent-proof screen there. Will take tha out tomorrow for a better look
