If you are capturing from a Mini DV Camcorder and have some type of IEE1394 (Firewire) port on your new PC, it should be. You can capture using windows moviemaker, by default and generally any other good editing software (Premiere, Avid etc). If you are going form VHS probably not. If you have a TV tuner card then you may be able to but your best bet is to go from VHS to mini DV then to your computer.

Is that what the DVin/out is for on the camcorder. In which case use scart/s video or what ever, out of the video, into the cam....I think.

If the camcorder only has DV/out, then you cant....I think.

What are you playing back the video from (VHS tape, DV-camcorder, movie projector )?

Is your PC a model that can be "looked up" on the net so that we can give a more qualified answer?

My understanding is that if you're transferring digital video, you don't need a capture card. If you're transferring VHS, TV or anything else that's analogue, you do.

I'd have thought the easiest way to find out is to look at the back of the PC where the PCI cards are and look for one with TV inputs such as SVHS or white, red & yellow phono inputs.

What are you trying to do? If you're looking to capture video to put onto DVD, you can buy an external USB Iomega DVD burner that has the TV/video capture card built in
