This was taken by my father sometime in the 1960s. It looks a bit 'Yorkshire' but could perhaps be west country.

If anyone recognises it or the canal system that would be great smile

Pretty sure its not that. The paddle gear isn't Rochdale Canal gear, looks like Leeds and Liverpool Canal to me.

If you want, I can share the picture on the Canalworld forum which should get an identification.

Thanks; I doubt it's the Rochdale as it wasn't navigable in the 1960s. After a look on Google Maps the countryside in the photo looks more open too.

Thanks. The L&L seems closer to the mark IMHO.

ETA looking just in front of the top gates there's a distinctive paddle mechanism I hadn't spotted before.

If it's Leeds Liverpool as you say I'd be looking around the Silsden Area

Apparently it looks like lock W20 on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Except it isn’t because it’s a wide lock.

I got this from Picarta AI :

This image shows Bank Newton Locks on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in North Yorkshire, England.

Specifically, the photo captures a view of the locks situated between Gargrave and Bank Newton. This stretch of the canal is well-known for its scenic setting within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Also this:

The image above is June 2023 - I'm not sure how much could change around a lock in that time?

Not sure it is L&L - that looks like a narrow canal - Leeds Liverpool is a wide.

That looks incredibly close and could well be it! Same paddle mechanism too.

Paddles are the L&L type also double top and bottom gates which apart from a few exceptions (and this isn't one of them) means its a wide lock.

It does look like the stretch between Skipton and Gargrave.

It looks like a winter shot, so maybe not a canal holiday but more likely that my parents were touring the area, saw the sign to the locks and went to investigate. My father loved the canals and photography and there's even a little turn-off where it's likely he parked. It's fascinating to retrieve bits of history like this smile

About 10 years later we hired a narrowboat and did it by water!

I love this level of nerdage. I'm a canals nerd myself, and this is admirable nerdery.

Chapeau.

Glad we got the wide/narrow thing sorted out. I'd hate to see anyone engaging in 'windlasses at dawn' over it biggrin

IIRC the L&L used 'short boats' so the proportion of the locks might look different from normal.
