Soooo…..

Had my maiden voyage today on the new bike and my god I must have looked like someone trying to walk a tight rope. It’s been ten years since I’ve ridden anything that hasn’t been around my street.

I also remembered why helmets are expensive. Wind noise. Yes, I cheaped out. It’s still to standard and light but the wind noise is too much. I also don’t think my marriage will survive me saying I need to buy another one!

So, earplugs. I wear them every night for sleep but the foam ones and I think I do have a wee bit of tinnitus / damage from decades standing next to massive speakers in clubs. I did wear them with my last bike, and don’t remember complaining too much about the noise but looking to open the floor. I’m sure it’s been well talked about on here but the search function is beyond my patience.

I’m not Bothered about anything where I can get music or calls, I bought this to have some time in my own head but I am open to some custom moulded ones if I see them at a reasonable price.

Also, side note. Those bloody cagers (I can say that again) haven’t improved their spacial awareness.

Second side note. I know it’s probably in my head but I think this thing is just as quick in the lower ranges than my 2003 R1.

I used to swear by Auritec but then tried a pair of Earpiece earplugs from Amazon. Wow, the difference! Auritec's were decent, but these are in a different league in terms of killing white noise, but still allowing the vital stuff through. More comfortable, too.

Agree. If you don't need speakers then these fit the bill perfectly.

The only other reason to go custom moulded is so you don't have to spend a few seconds rolling the foam.

(I have used both extensively)

I have custom plugs from ACS and they are excellent. Though foam plugs do a good job for lower price.

Certainly get musicians plugs for concerts - it still sounds great and your ears don't ring afterwards.

Same, I get the green ones. A box lasts forever.

Went to my local bike shop recently to top up on some foam ones and ended up buying some reusable ones from Auritech, not cheap at £19.99, but I figured if I never buy another set then theyre worth it, and the added advantage of being more environmentally friendly because of that.
They come in a nice little metal case with a keyloop which is very light but feels solid.

Very happy with them so far.

This for me ,they are low cost and it's all about inserting them well into the ear for best results.

3M disposables for maximum cut, I use them for a long high speed journey. I use the Auritechs for IAM stuff as we'll stop and chat quite often so they're easy to remove and replace.

“Cagers”. Please. No. Utterly cringeworthy.

I know. Sorry. I hate it as much as you and I’m reflection it’s not remotely funny. I’ve given people abuse for using it. I’ll stand in the corner for a bit.

I use 3M and Howard Leight (I have a large box of both) foam disposable plugs. I did use some custom made plugs but I didn't think they were any better than the disposable ones and I actually found it easier to get the foam ones in properly. As for speakers, they're in the helmet.

Ive got a set of Eggz ones, the viral marketing on Facebook got me as it promised good wind protection but still hear things around you thanks to replaceable filters. The noise reduction is fine cruising on the motorway or hooning around, and I can hear people talking with helmet on just about. Not as good as disposable foam if you want more isolation though.

I have wind issues due to my head shape needing a bigger helmet so spend a lot of time sticking things in my ears frown

I agree, it's a merkin slang word that Gentlemen do not use.

I have a set of Eggz earplugs which I'm very happy with, they make riding long distances much more comfortable but I can also have a conversation at traffic lights (so long as the other person speaks loudly enough anyway!)

Does anyone know of any narrow/thin earplugs?

I can use the yellow foam disposables if I really roll them up tight they will go in but after an hour or so the pressure starts to get really painful.

None of the harder arrow shaped rubber ones seem to be slim enough..

Any suggestions?

Probably by chopper riders who have a “get back whip”
