Assuming petrol is still available (!) we are driving from the Rotterdam ferry terminal to the French Alps in June, planning to stay near Troyes for one night then drive to Annecy for a few nights, then onto Briancon area for a few days, finally back via Reims and to Rotterdam again.
First time driving in France really, what's the situation regarding tolls / Road charges etc ?
(Switzerland was fairly easy ie bought the vignette on entry. )
Other than we've booked ferry/hotels I haven't planned any of the mundane drives to the hotels themselves. Tom Tom or Google maps I suspect will be sufficient but am unsure if we should avoid Toll roads etc, I don't mind paying if it'll make the journey a load easier.

We are sorted for the Alps driving road plans, this is purely about making our way south to get to them.
Cheers

ViaMichelin will give you the full picture.

There's a route planner part of it which will give you the "full" costs and time of any route, including tolls and fuel. It doesn't account for fuel being more expensive in motorway service stations though.

Ah nice one will have a look for that. Petrol prices may become a factor where previously it wouldn't have worried me using motorway services but the R8 only does 22mpg on a run at best generally lol!

Getting a toll Tag takes away all stress from navigating any tolls.

That^^ Short answer is that it's about €100 each way and pretty much halves your journey time.

Bip & Go is your friend there. Only pay when you use it and works too in Italy, Spain & Portugal. Also works in car parks and airport drop off. DD straight out of your UK bank account at the end of the month you use it in. We drove down to Briancon in Jan (coming off at Grenoble and doing the scenic last 120kms), cost was thus:

You pay €24 one-time cost for the tag and a monthly €1.90 subscription only when you use it.

+1 for the Bip&Go toll tag here as well. We used it to drive down to Italy and back last September. €24 for the tag and €2 charge for the month it is "activated" in. It just sits in the glovebox otherwise and doesn't cost me anything.

Comes with a decent little app that will allow you to track your usage as you go, and as mentioned above you can use it to pay for various car parks and airports etc. App also has a handy little route planner that will estimate your fuel bill & tell you the cost of the tolls on your planned route - good for planning budgets ahead of time!
