Avoiding overlap of the Trump thread, how have the actions of the current US administration affected your attitude towards all things American?

  • Do you still want to take a holiday there?
  • Do you resist travelling to the US for business?
  • Do you avoid buying American brands or investing in the US?
  • Do you view American TV/music/culture differently?
  • Do you view your American friends/acquaintances differently?
  • Have current events made you look more favourably at China, Europe or other allies?

In an odd way, my opinion of the USA hasn't altered over the last 30 years, I've always been vaguely disappointed by them. The only difference now is that I see Trump almost as a separate entity to the USA, with the country itself being dragged along for the duration with little choice.

Why do you not offer pro-American choices? I'm not, but others may be.

I tried to not load the question positively or negatively. Very happy to hear both views!

I wouldn't set foot in the country while him and the current lunatic fringe are in charge. Disclose your social media accounts and face a grilling for any anti-Trump content just to visit? No thanks. That, and the widespread outlawing of abortion means I'm not going back any time soon.

The other factor is that they were voted in by millions and millions of Americans, who are presumably fine and happy with the way it's gone. So it's not just the leadership, I've got no desire to speak to these sorts of people or give them any of my money.

I have a bunch of non-Trumpian American friends who are making plans to leave at the moment. Including a mum of three girls who lives in Texas and, if one of her daughters accidentally got pregnant, would have to drive her 6 hours over the border into Colorado to have an abortion.

Not really, never been although I'd like to visit some of the wildernesses, in a sort of Bill Bryson way.

Just a dark period in history.

Going to the USA on holiday again this year.

Still heavily invested in the USA

Don't view the country or the people any differently.

The current administration are a bunch of clowns. No different to those running the UK. I'm not going to lose any sleep over either. I'll crack on with my life, use my vote accordingly, and generally ignore the rest of it.

As for the Americans themselves. Yes they voted Trump. In very similar circumstances that Labour got voted in here - i.e. one look at the alternatives tell you everything. To say all those voters are fine with things going on now is naive. There will be plenty that are, and just as many who aren't (much the same as labour voters here)

No change here.
I have always looked at them as loud mouthed, big headed, tossers and best avoided.

No different at all. This is a transient period, the people are the same as they ever were.

I would have, but Ukraine has made me realize that China, Russia are ****ing dangerous and whatever we think of America they have been an incredible protector and free trade and freedom is almost as essential to them as it is to us. So I feel Russia has forced me to pick a side in Global Politics and the side I'm picking is America and it's not even close.

America's always been a bit fked up. Having Trump in charge is just helping people to see it a bit more now IMO

I've been a dozen times over the years and was due to visit some friends this year but that's been put on hold for now. I've got no interest in supporting the, getting caught up in their drama and there are plenty of other places to visit.

I went last year but only because we had to for a wedding. I find yanks who support Trump very very odd and have no want to interact with them.

Opinion hasn't really changed; I can separate the actions of the current administration from the American population. Was looking at the pacific north-west as a possible holiday later this year, but the administrations current FAFO of TSA shows how reckless they are happy to be messing with everyone's travel, and I can't be bothered with any extra hassle so looking at the great white north instead.
