Has anyone else noticed recently an increase in kids (mainly teenagers) riding around at night with no lights on and no helmet? I'm not sure if this has always been the case and I am noticing more because I have 2 sons but where I live it seems to be that 90% of em just don't bother with either!
I make both my boys always wear a helmet and have their lights on when it's dark. I thought this was quite basic to be honest but it seems not. I've seen 3 near misses in the last week on my estate and on every occasion if the driver had not been concentrating there would have been (at least) life changing injuries for the cyclist. It seems ridiculous to me that parents are allowing their kids out like this.
I've written to the local secondary school today to air my concerns. I know it's not their responsibility but surely if they have time to teach all this DEI (ahem stuff), then teaching things that could potentially save lives should be a priority.
I've no idea if its an image thing and being seen with a helmet and lights on is not cool but if this is the case that's completely bonkers!

Up here it's the above plus black trackies, shiny bin bag puffer jacket with hood up, faces covered, riding a stolen electric bike on one wheel whilst en route to noise up the police or stab a fellow student and help themselves to their i-phone...
I suspect the parents, if they exist, don't care...

Ah we have them as well. My lad is 8 and he's had it drummed into him that if / when he comes off and hurts himself, it'll probably be riding 500yds up the street to his pals house rather than hurling himself down some off piste stuff in the Tweed Valley. So, unless he's got a helmet on... he doesn't get to touch his bike. But there are a couple kids around here seem to not bother with helmets... which is mental. I've said to a couple previously and was met with pure disgust. Thankfully mine watches plenty MTB fail videos on YouTube and gas a healthy understanding of how quickly it could end up in A&E. Most the young team just seem to not give a damn about most things.

ks in one post. I don't necessarily think its only a bike thing. A lot of the groups of youths I see are generally wearing dark colours and often hoods up and or faces covered even when not cycling.
I also see quote a few adults who appear to be commuting wearing no helmet, no lights and dark colours so its not just the kids either
