So Apple has now rolled out ios 26.4, and following Government regulations, you now need to prove you are 18+, by photo ID or proof of credit card details.

My 95yr old father doesn’t have either of these so maybe locked out of age appropriate apps etc.

Called Apple who advised applying for a PayPal credit card but yet you need proof of ID & income.

I understand this is a government requirement but it thinks everyone is IT literate and has compatible ID, you can’t even use a passport. What a shambles

Mine just told me that I'd had an Apple account for over 18 years, so it was obvious that I was over 18.

What happens when your kids are on iPhones and they're under 18?

Supposedly, it means they're not allowed access to apps/content that are rated for 18+.

However, if a stupid/uncaring/lazy/busy/etc. parent decides to set it all up for them and put their credit card details in, then it's a fail of parenting 101!

But please, don't complain to the Daily Mail with your sad face when your spawn of satan runs up a huge bill on loot boxes!

It will happen though.

Its like the parents around here that allow their under 16's to use their driving licence to sign up for Lime Scooters etc and then are shocked when they get fined for their kids using the scooters.

This governments handling of IT requirements is frankly ridiculous. It's clear that it's been though up by people who really don't understand IT. First there was the porn ban, then the non ban of social media for U16s.

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/125662 - If you re asked to confirm that you re an adult
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/126788 - Age requirements for managing an Apple Account in the UK

Quick summary for you I wrote up today at work:

Once an iPhone or iPad updates to iOS 26.4 users will be presented with an Age Verification Check. There are currently 3 ways this verification can happen in the UK:

AppleID is over 18 years old - Verification passes, this seems hit and miss from anecdotal feedback so far
Credit Card - This can be either a credit card in an Apple Wallet or a separate credit card
UK Drivers Licence - Scan of front and back

Passports are not accepted as Apple didn't realise we don't have the same National ID cards that our EU cousins do (no really!). You can use a UK Citizen Card but virtually no one has one of these.

Not foolproof but if you want to get an idea of how long you've had your apple account then check your earliest purchase...

Access your Purchase History from iPhone or iPad Settings > Apple Account name > Media & Purchases > View Account > Purchase History.
Tap ‘Last 90 Days, Paid’ at the top.
Tap Date Range > Custom, and select the oldest year and month you see here.
Then, set Cost to Free and Type to all categories, to see the date, month, and year you first got something from Apple’s App Store, iTunes Store, or Books Store.

Mine is 2004 so I suspect they will not be asking me to prove if I'm over 18.

I'm sure it will achieve it's aims.

Thanks for this. Mine was the app that turned your iPhone into a beer glass in 2008. hehe

Hmmm. Mine's showing Feb 2010 - unless I was two years old when I made my first apple purchase I should be okay. But probably not. irked

Mine was 2012 but as I already had a Credit Card in my Apple Wallet it verified just fine.

What apps will be blocked?

Does the phone also block websites that Apple deem to be unsuitable for under-18s?

Anything that would allow access to explicit or adult content, Discord, Audible etc

It will enable content filtering as well.

I assume reddit would be included with that? What about Snapchat? Pretty much all social media can be used for explicit content.

What about VPN's? If you switch your phones location to a country that doesn't require it, will the phone unlock everything, I'm assuming not?

Just done the update on my iPhone, it said the length of time I have had an Apple account confirms I’m over 18 and that was it. Happy days
