My 1997 4.0 sometimes gives a little crunch in protest when I select reverse gear. Just wondered if anybody else's does this too? I guess its just part of its character!

Doesn't always sort mine out. I need to pump the clutch two or three times before engaging reverse.

It's all to do with the non-synchromeshed reverse, I fink...

As above, I go into 5th first before trying reverse. Works every time for me. Also works on a friend's 430 (she told me!) and a 5.0 I know.

Give it a go!

Doesn't always sort mine either. If it doesnt, I find if you slot it into 5th, then let out the clutch until the revs just start to drop, then dip it again, when you try slotting her into reverse, I guarantee it'll slide smoothly into place...

Yep as people say TADTS

I was terrible at this and was disparing of ever managing it smoothly I tried 5th etc(actually I tried every gear at different times) before reversing and nothing seemed to to it. When I eventually gave in and admitted to myself that I was unable to get it in without grinding a little I suddenly seemed to get the knack and Now it is very unusual that I make any noise.

I really don't know what changed but I suddenly 'got it' and things are smooth now.
don't worry there is a knack and while I have it now I don't know what it is

Yup.. If the 5th then reverse method dont work I start to put it into reverse then start letting the clutch out gently and it slots just nicely....

Its one of those things you just need to get the feel for with the T5. On my 450 the exact and only routine that works is:

Clutch down
Engage 5th (make sure its fully engaged)
Select Neutral
Clutch up
Clutch down
Select reverse
Lift clutch slightly, see if it bites in Reverse. If not repeat above - it usually goes in 1st time but very occasionally it needs a second go.

The correct procedure is thus:

Depress clutch
Select first
Rev to 5000rpm
Turn wheel full lock
Release clutch
Park.

Maybe you have some air in the hydraulics?

"I say! Barman! Could you let my friend Paddington have an Entendre?"

"Would he like a large one Sir?"

"Best make it a double, he looks like he could do with a stiff one"

What is this thread? Carry on up the Gearbox?

Top tip reference reverse in Chimaera.

If your "other car" has six gears, remember which one you are in.

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, reverse isn't the easiest method of improving reverse gear selection

Surpised that this sort of thing is not explained when you purchased the car, buy anyway....

Find that simply selecting any of the forward gears first will allow reverse to go in smoothly without any problems.

If your car is at Austec I'm sure that they will help show you the best way.

"Yes sir, your swanky new £30k sportscar is a b!tch to get into reverse, and the sound of cogs crunching and grinding is "quite normal""
