Long story short in that my dad owns the car and took ill towards the end of last year and the battery went flat and the car sat like that in the garage for a couple of months.

AA guy came today and said battery dead but was able to jump start the car and car was left running for an hour before I picked it up and drove it home for 45 mins (mostly m-way). It ran absolutely fine. AA guy said battery be fine after a decent hour or so run.

When i parked the car on my driveway I turned round to lock it and the handles had retracted suggesting the car was locked. Now I'm sure I didn't lock it but hey, maybe I did.

Now neither of the key fobs will unlock the car. Changed both batteries in the fobs and no difference.

So I'm thinking two possibilities....
1. The car battery is still goosed
2. The key fobs have decoded from the car seeing as it sat so long with a dead battery

Any thoughts?

TIA

Have you used the emergency key to open the car?

Once in, see if you can start & crank the engine. If it's still as dead as a wotsit, then I'd start with swapping out the main battery.

Maybe unsurprisingly it was the main car battery that was kaput.

When i put a multimeter across the terminals i was getting a reading of only 2.0v so i guess Mr AA man got enough juice from his jump pack to get the car going and then the alternator was generating enough to keep the electrics running but that battery was never recovering. Luckily i'd switched off the start/stop feature (as always).

New battery installed and everything is just fine. Although what a friggin mission to install the battery! I have never had to remove so much stuff (engine covers, strut brace, electronic pack) to get to a battery in my life.
