The World is Coming Apart
Discussion
As I still work long hours from Hurricanes Katrina & Rita(What we now call Katrita), I see earthquakes killing 30,000 in Pakistan, New Hampshire flooding like hell, Guatemala with deadly mudslides, not to mention movie stars in California having to live in their spare mansions as their primary mansions burn down in wildfires. I wish we could call a "time out" on misery, death, and destruction for a bit and all catch our collective breaths. Many National Guard units from the States are falling in with Task Forces of Regular US forces to help in Guatemala and Pakistan. Sometimes I feel like going to a Nebraska cornfield, cutting myself a crop circle and waiting for the mothership to take me away!
Stay with it Jimbaux.
The reliaty is that the world has always been this way, but with a greater population and massivley improved communications over 100years ago, we are much more aware of it than we ever were before.
Unfortunately humans also have a habit of building in somewhat dangerous places - just wait till Vesuvias erupts and takes the couple of million Italians who have built all around it and on it's slopes with it...

This isn't new, the old 'global warming' cries are rubbish. The news always states 'The worst since 19??' so how can it be worsening. The floods are a natural occurrence. We feel them badly because we stupidly build our homes on flood plains. The next thing will be an earthquake in California. Again what do people expect? Earthquakes happen in earthquake zones. Flooding happens on flood plains. This isn't the worst flooding to hit America and the recent Indian earthquake is small in comparison to some in living memory.
No disrespect intended, yes I am sad for people's loss but this is only normal earth activity, it isn't something new.

Keep with it Jim, but I can't help feeling that you're right. Theres been a few too many major disasters in the last year for my liking.
For some reason (despite a total inability to predict tomorrows weather), we are apparently due the harshest Winter in a long long time. Somethings up.

Seconded!
Keep up the good work Jim.......
Well, you can stick with it, get right in there and make a difference, which is what you are doing. Or you can come to England and settle down and watch it all on TV in the pub with a nonchalant detachment whilst nursing a warm pint.
I feel that somehow you had a choice, and are doing the former, you are a true superstar. For me, I just sort of fell into the latter, wouldnt know how I could make a difference either, except donate money. So thats what I do. Pretty poor I know.

keep it up jimbeaux good to hear from you
I long for the day that I can just sit here and have pointless arguments on PH with equally hard-headed people! Don't worry; I will come through standing, if for nothing else, just to piss off anyone who thinks I won't.

interesting about the winter comment.
long range weather forecasting say beyond 30 days is practically pointless. past records are no indicator of future occurences. How do they know ? erring on the side of pessimism and then hey look, not as bad as we thought....?
Without veering to far off point, I've heard it discussed on three different radio and two tv channels. Not sure how they know, but they seem pretty sure. Your point has merit though, it'll either be "we told you so" or "well, look on the bright side, it could've been worse".

I second that
,if you ever need a rest Jimbeax move to Basingstoke we dont have a forest near us,we're thousands of feet above sea level,no high winds, volcanoes,no faults, mudbanks, zoo's for scarey animals to escape from...infact not much happens here
Dubs - we were also predicted the hottest summer - which it patently wasn't.
Weather predictions longer than 5 days in the future are just guesses. Educated guesses they may be, but still only guesses.
Dubs - do you remember the Dublin blizzards of early 1982?
Two foot snowdrifts on the Howth Road. I had to dig my little FIAT 127 out a snowdrift one night so I could drive from Baldoyle to Sutton Park!

Theres a photo of me somewhere. Dude, I was 4!
Our Summer was quite good here though. Only rained during 1 two week period and sun the rest. But yes, it is all a guess. They just seem pretty sure.

Not forgetting the tsunami and the current man-made disaster that is Iraq.

God forbid, the *world* really is falling apart.

Many ??
What size of regular and reserve units are helping out in these places and what are your sources ?

Hurricanes are named in alphabetical order so Rita is quite a lot of Hurricanes for 1 year, is it a record anyone?
The Guatemala disaster was caused by Stan, so that's Rita + 1... and still a month or so to go in the hurricane season.
Quick google for Carribean/Atlantic hurricanes gives:
2004 Otto
2003 Peter
2002 N (some unnamed that year)
2001 Olga
I guess with better and better satellite tracking more deepening depressions are spotted and named before they become hurricanes, so the 'named' number is probably rising - looking at e.g. 1960 you got to Florence followed by one unnamed tropical storm.
