Hot tub on car roof?

Got a large, but lightweight hot tub to go to the tip.
Pump and heater removed, 1 man lift.
Is it legal to put it on my insignia roof bars then ratchet strap it through the windows, crossing over front right rear left and vice versa?
Properly secured so it cant slide off in any direction.
It doesnt fit in my van, and they dont allow vans in the council tip anyway.
If that wont work i can attack it with the recip until it fits in binbags but disposing of it in one piece would be easier.

One risk with a large object on roof bars is wind resistance ripping the whole lot off the roof, unless you mean tying directly to roof bars originally built as part of an estate car.

I'd cut it up and stick it in the car. You may find that avoids getting charged £100 (or whatever) for dumping "building waste" at the tip.

If you strapped it that way, none of the doors would open (unless they're frameless doors)???

Moved these very gingerly about 2 miles during lockdown. Thankfully it was a quiet traffic day but I wouldn't want to risk it again. I think you will be perfectly fine as long as its tied down well.

My local tip has a restricted height entry to discourage big vans / commercials, who have to book and pay a fee. Check it will fit under if there is one!

Its the factory built in front to back roof rails on the estate, not the side to side clamp on roof bars. Thats why I would put the ratchet straps through the windows, or maybe try thorough the open doors then shut the doors on them. Car is a workhorse shed so cosmetic damage is of no concern.

Don't do it on a Sunday morning wait until afternoon. Local plod go looking for stuff like unsecured loads on Sunday mornings as they have to wait for the criminals to wake up. Source: local plod that stopped me for having an unsecured load (which was actually an amarok with some suff in the bed but not pertruding over the top.

I used to cary a kayak on the roof of an Alfa 156, strapped through the open doors. Only problem was strap getting in the way of my head!

I once had to collect four 4'x4'x10' blocks of styrofoam in my pickup, the weight wasnt an issue but it looked like a double decker bus with 16' of styrofoam on top! 15-20mph trip but made it ok.

I will post a pic, might be in a couple of weeks time.
Hummed and hawed about repairing it and using it for another year, but the bd thing is always leaking or developing another or pump fault, and the kids love it until its their turn to clean it.
