Hi

Thinking about building a restomod 64 68 Mustang.

Always loved how they look, but let s be honest the stock suspension isn t exactly brilliant.
Been looking at a few upgraded front setups online with modern components and adjustability.
Some of them look properly sorted, but also quite a jump from the original feel.

Not sure if it s worth going that far or if it takes away from what the car is.

Anyone here done similar?

Cheers

Have you tried decent stock suspension?
Its not that bad if its tip top, neither are the brakes(discs) or the steering(manual).
I have always thought the Mustang was one of the most developed cars ever when released, especially 1967 onwards.

QA1 seems the most popular.

I was chatting with a mechanic buddy of mine, and he straight up said the Mustang’s suspension is one of the worst designs ever 😅 But hey, it’s been over 50 years - technology’s come a long way since then.

Stock suspension not exactly brilliant? Compared to what?

There's some really good modern upgrades for Mustangs, but changing the front only is rather pointless without doing the back as well.

Also, some of the stuff is a bit too extreme and can make the car not very nice, but it depends why improvement is considered neccessary and the exact reasons that improvement is sought?

My Dad had loads of 60s-70s Mustangs when I was a kid

Unless you want to track day it then the standard suspension is good enough, he used to out corner everyone we met on the roads not because it was better but because most people are terrible drivers and only use a fraction of their car's capability

There was squealing tyres and sideways action but that's what makes it fun biggrin

James Hunt (quite a handy driver from the 70s) had one and really rated it. It's a myth that muscle and pony cars were only good in a straight line.

I recall from watching Fast n Loud and American Hotrod that there's a huge industry in restoring and restomodding Mustangs in the US, including suspension upgrades, so it might be better joining a more US focused forum for the best knowledge.

As other people have asked - are you trying to restore a 60s Mustang to 60s spec so you can cruise around for the vintage experience, or are you trying to make a modern car out of something 60 years old?

Well over a decade ago I built the car above, with stock leafs at the back but trick stuff upfront - Total Control Products I think it was - cost a fortune. Was it worth it - well it handled better but it was very hard ...

,

Finally got around to upgrading the suspension on my 68, and honestly - should ve done it way sooner.

Went with a new setup and the difference is night and day. The car feels way tighter, no more rattles or weird noises, and it just drives so much smoother now. Handles better too, especially on turns - feels way more planted.

It took a more serious setup than a standard suspension upgrade, but the difference in how the car feels on the road was absolutely worth it.

If anyone s on the fence about refreshing their suspension - totally worth it.
