Artemis is taking astronauts to the moon for the first time in decades with a potential moon landing.

Just about to take off!

I’m excited! Are you?

And they’re on their way. Watched it with my kid: I was too young for the original launch but didn’t want him to miss it 50 years later.

Impressive to say the least. The big milestone is when the do the burn tomorrow which will take them around the moon. No turning back from that, but for now there's a day in earth orbit.

I was in Florida and saw a Saturn V launch to the spaced shuttle in, I think, 1994. Unforgettable.

Do you mean you saw tha Space Shuttle launch to the Mir space station?

In 1994 there were no Saturn V launches, the last one was to Skylab 1n the 70's.

I saw Endeavour take off from Canaveral, it's quite a surreal experience, this dot appears on the horizon and it's gone in seconds, your brain can't comprehend it all. The weird bit was the speakers hearing the shuttle to ground transmission.

Artemesis is bigger so maybe you see more at distance.

Actually, the last Saturn V launch was Skylab (uncrewed). The crewed flights to Skylab were Saturn IB.

Correction, the last Saturn V wasn't launched TO Skylab. It WAS Skylab. The top stage (SIVB) was the actual Skylab space station itseelf -

The exhaust from the Liquid Hydrogen/Oxygen is mainly water - so fairly harmless.

The exhaust smoke from the Solid Rocket Motors is a very different matter.

I worked right next to the NASA rocket test stand at Stennis MS when I was working at Rolls Royce jet engine test stand and say quite a few rocket test firings in preparation for this Artemis launch.

The extreme violence of these things going off is something that will stay with me forever, it used to form a rain cloud in the sky above where I was working which then gave a 30 second or so rain shower.

Incredible.
