Mechanical breakdown insurance.
Discussion
Come the begining of December my Mechanical breakdown insurance is due to expire.
In my 2 years of ownership, I have had 'cover' just in case one of those very expensive 'things' happens...
The first year it was covered with a WH insurance,(part of the purchase package when I bought the car from Castle TVR), and this past year I arranged cover with Autoprotect, via James Agger. This cost me about £400ish, and had a claims limit of £2000, which probably would have covered something like a clutch failure or similar.
I have not had to make a claim on either...(yes miracles do sometimes happen...) ;)...and just know if I dont do the sensible thing, something will go wrong....$hit happens!
I have heard of owners with different mechanical breakdown insurance, I believe the AA did one. So my questions are...
1. Who are you insured with?
2. Cost for this insurance.
3. Have you had to deal with a claim with them, and were they any good?
4. Ceiling level/amount of claims allowed per year?
Muchos grassyarse.....

AA do a "Parts and Labour" cover - it's on their website. £58 a year (plus the cost of membership) and you get 3x claims of £500.
They used to do one for £99 a year which allowed 3x claims of £1000... but can't seem to find that on their site any more..
The £99 option was stopped jan/feb this year.Ap have knocked back every one of my claims,
rear brake discs,"fair wear and tear" F{@k off I've only done 1500 miles. Dealer footed the bill.
Front shock leaking, " we want all the origional suspension put back on the car so we can inspect..."
yeah right, I paid 32k for a car and am going to try and pull a fast one for £170.00.
My service is up in 400 miles, I am in a quandry as to where to have it done. Dealer=big money, independant= less money, but warenty will certainly not be there should anything happen.
Considering the warenty expires in April and the car will inevitably end up in the garage for much of winter, I think I will bite the bullet and go outside the dealer network. The only problem is the independant I prefer doesn't service anymore. What to do?
Nick.

Yes he does, but outside normal working hours!! You have to quote 'ASH' when you want a service, you have my blessings and my reference!
But if he *truly* cant open his heart even the slightest, then just call him again! and again! and again! until he finally gives in!
He was the best, he still is the best. No one else passed the test, and he is better than the rest.

Ted in your position I would be very surprised if you got anything but the best service, cosidering the potential for a good plug and all that.
True I have not had any complete failure, but I know my car and I cant feel impending doom.
Nick.
Ash you never know maybe one day the great man will return.

Its a red-rose mind you, touch wood and all that... stay one service ahead of the game at all times! (which I think you already are...)
Hey if you are looking for another independant, there is a VERY secretive mechanic in Luton, normally does my GT, in the Sundon Park area... he doesnt doo british, but, he works on most the barons cars, he dont f'about!... you could always consider him for regular servicing, just get a servicing list to him, and he'll bloody do a good job... he builds engines too.. email me if you want to go for it...
next to the international man of mystery, he's the only other general high performance mechanic I have ever trusted... of course you could always consider Craft, but knowing you, you'll probably be thinking 'hmmm, weathers gone down hill, oh what the heck, heres a few thou more, do the service and drop in a blower with low compression pistons while you're at it, oh and dont forget the polish, I want her gleaming for less drag on the way home...'

Ash it’s funny you should say that, as I have given the Craft option some thought.
Obviously they (Craft) would be more than capable of servicing the Cerb.
I went down there and met the chaps, and Ash agree they certainly know there stuff, true no fancy reception and late served by some pretty thing, but I prefer the oil under the fingernails approach. They are straight talking and that’s important. The amount of complete boll{}P+s I have heard from supposed reputable dealers is terrible.
Whilst the blower upgraded is a serious bit of kit, my concern is this. My red rose is as far as I m concerned the top of the tree; I am talking unconverted here, as it came from the factory.
Would banging a blower or such in it not be bastardizing it?
I can see the benefit of strengthened rods, and such but do I need them for what I use the car for?
What do you chaps think? I doubt I would go for any more power as handling and tyres would probably pay more dividends for me in the real world.
Nick.
Oh your right about the polish, no excuse for anything but the best service.

You're definitely right, you have the cream of the crop, and there is soooo much more you can configure and you will still be miles away from using the your beasts real abilities on track to its limits.
But, saying that, if you do decide to keep your car for say a few years, a blower upgrade will yield a lot of extra power, the reduction in compression ratio will reduce the stress in the top end no question, those who've had high compression heads melt, snap valves know what I mean by that.
I'd say, enjoy the beast to THE MAX, fine tune the handling. If and when you get bored and want MORE, you always know where there is a team that can help out.
Track Car Solutions is there just for enthusiasts like yourself, to help fine-tune suspension, geometry, tyre selection etc etc...
And when you feel you're bored of tracking and want to start drag-running, then the blower is always an option.
But if you do end up going down the Tasmin route, you could always do what Ceejay done with his, throw in a twin-turbo cossie engine in there and up it to 600horses and then REALLY have some terrifying fun on the track, just be careful, these tasmins with all that power can take off!

However, it still seems to be available for renewals as I've just got mine through (yesterday).
Neil.
The £99 one. Had claims for Starter (£400 ish)and steering rack (£975) this year.
Only thing you need to remember is to call the breakdown service out before you try and claim.

Its a shame the new proposed TVR warranty doesnt work on condition of car (verified) rather than just age
Isn't it a combination of both. They will inspect a car regardless of service history and if it passes then it's available for warranty. I suspect there's an age limit on the car though but I don't know what it is.

I do think that cars like yours are pretty rare, and it might loose, rather than gain value (in all senses)with a blower.
Why not pick up a cheap Cerb & do the "Peter & GreenV8s" thing, i.e. stick a blower on a (mostly?!) unmodded motor, on the basis that if it goes bang, it's easy enough to get another powerplant, and reinstall the blower?
Quick updat regards Ap knocking back the damper, yesterday I spoke to the service department at Barnet TVR, making it perfectly clear the should be fighting my corner for me.
As of this morning they are going to get the money for the shock and fitting paid by AP.
As I have just had a set of brake pads put in and not picked up the car yet, there is going to be no cost, result.
Ok I know the shock is probably a little more but I am happy with that. Good show TVR Barnet.
