Where to sell motocross bike?

I’ve got a hankering for a new road bike, which means I need to make some space in the garage by selling my old motocross bike (2005 Honda CRF250)

I’ve never tried to sell a motocross bike before, but it has a few complications:
1. It’s not road registered, so test rides aren’t possible unless I take it somewhere suitable
2. No V5 (as not registered) and no proof of purchase (I bought it privately 18 years ago!)
3. Off-road bikes tend to attract a certain demographic…I’m wary of potential ‘buyers’ turning up on an Sur-Ron with balaclavas and knives.
4. It’s a pretty old bike, so there may not even be much of a market for it

Is there a good way to sell such bikes that I’m not aware of?

Maybe try taking it to your local motocross track and sticking a "for sale" board on it? At least your prospective buyers in that environment are more likely to use it for that purpose.

I'd start by at least trying to get some documents for it, everyone is going to assume it's dodgy if it's got nothing with it.

I agree with trying a few Motorcross tracks, it's probably at a price point where if you try to sell it on Facebook/eBay you're just going to get hassle.

Have a look about for some autojumble/swap meets too. There's a few around my area around this time of year.

Facebook market place, Son in-law sold his previous bikes on there, Now taken up classic car racing less injuries!! His Dad rides in senior races so think you might be able to sell a 2005 bike to someone like him..Good Luck !!

I would have had it off you but I see you're in Sheffield, its a bit far for a bike I don't need and have nowhere to use but if the price was right I guess..

I would put it into a local agricultural auction seller if there is such a thing near you, or an auction house that does cars etc. Yes you'll pay fees on the sale but the market for something like that could surprise you and it would keep you at arms length from any scrotes coming to relieve you of it.

All I can say is that every time that I've bought a cheaper car or bike from eBay the seller has been amazed that I've actually turned up and bought the thing. The last one I bought the bloke had 3 for sale, had taken deposits on the other 2 and they hadn't been collected. Can still see one of them for sale now.

Thanks all, some good ideas here.
I certainly hadn’t considered an agricultural auction, that could be a useful option.
I reckon I’ll start by dropping into Syd Smiths to see if they have an advert board, or know anyone on the lookout for a good value bike.

Failing that, Tam_Mullen, I’ve got a flight from Edinburgh airport next month; that might be close enough to tempt you. 😆

I have sold my previous two MX bikes through Facebook marketplace, thankfully without issue. I did take some extra precautions before organising viewings, as I didn't want potential scrotes seeing where my others bikes were stored.

With the last one I sold, the buyer was quite understanding of this and I actually met him and did the deal at the local pub. I have never felt the need to do this when selling any other type of bike.

Another option is to speak to your local MX shop and see if they will sell it for you for a small commission? Saves you dealing with buyers

I have always put in the add the bike is in storage and will need 24/48 hours to collect for veiwing. Then meet in a public place even if it has just been next street over or local car park.

Issue i have seen with local MX tracks here is being followed home or tracker put on van/trailer then a visit a few days later
