That s easy as only one of those exists.
Or to put it another way you mean 997.2 or 991.1.Both are good, the 991.1 is more modern inside. If you find a manual they are like hens teeth but you will pay for it. Both are holding their value really well. If you will daily it the 991.1 is probably better but you won’t go wrong with either.
Owned a 997.2 for 6 years…not owned a 991.1 GTS but I’ve driven a 991.1 and .2 GTS and owned a .2 GT3 for 8 years.
People talk about the 997 being a much smaller car than the 991…it isn’t. At the rear wheels it might actually be winder than a 991.1 because it’s a wide body car. It feels smaller because the glasshouse is narrower…width at the wing mirrors is narrower. So the cars feels like it has a lot less bulk.
997.2 is about control points….
Hydraulic steering vs first gen electric
Better six speed gear box…the 7 speed in the 991.1 was revised for the 991.2 GTS
I loved the chassis on mine, it felt just right going down country roads. I’d say the 991.1 does a better job with the damping.
991.1 has better noise ! A lot of people put cross pipe on the 997.2…probably it’s biggest weak spot.
I really like the way the engine in the 997.2 loves revs. The marriage of manual box and that engine is the secret sauce of the 997.2 GTS. Teh gearing is just perfect on a country road.
Interior feels more old school in the 997…that’s a personal thing though.
Both will hold money really well as I think there are even less manual 991.1 GTS’s than there are 997.2’s.

I have owned my 997 GTS C2 Manual for 13 years. I borrowed a 991.1 GTS when they launched for 24 hours so had a real back to back experience. My takeaways were
Externally there is not a huge difference in size (I now also have a 991.2 GT3 parked next to my GTS and the 991 is only marginally longer and wider)
Internally the 997 feels a lot more intimate than the 991 (mentioned above due to the glass house changes and maybe the centre console design).
When I drove the 991 GTS (and same applies to my 991.2 GT3) they felt a lot more modern than the 997. I think this is driven by things like the dash layout, infotainment and internal feel of the size.
I know everyone says it but the steering and suspension of the 997 was much more interactive than the 997 (not now true for my 991.2 GT3 which is quite different to the 991.1 GTS).
Noise of the stock 991 GTS was better than the stock 997 GTS as mentioned above (my car now has a sharkwerks centre box which largely fixes that), but the 991 GTS did feel a little more artificial with the manufactured pops and bangs on overrun in sport mode which some will like and some will not.
They are both wonderful cars and I would choose the 997 as a weekend modern classic that can easily be used a daily if you need it to. I would choose the 991 if I planned to do bigger mileages and use more routinely as a daily, but can still thrill and be serious fun on a Sunday morning blast. I do think the point at which you get into the fun zone will be at a higher speed in the 991 as its limits are a step on from the 997 (my fun zone is defined as the point you feel you re using a decent percentage of the available grip and acceleration).
I also wholeheartedly agree about the engine on the 997, it’s an exciting engine that rewards being taken to the top of the rev range. Given that I also have the 4.0 GT3 next to it and it holds its own that’s pretty impressive.
I don t think you can go far wrong, but I do suspect the residuals on the 997 might be a little better than the 991 but who knows. I am biased on that point however, having bought my 997 from an OPC cheap 13 years ago when they didn t carry a premium.
