Friend of mine just came back to a car to find a pile of sand under it and also in the fuel cap aperture….

What on earth has happened here? Has the (I’m told still full) tank started reverse pumping its contents out and someone passing/services has tried to make it safe, or some sort of shenanigans/syphoning theft been attempted /going on?

Expansion due to the heat, especially if the tank has been brimmed. Sand put down by concerned passer by.

Who brims a tank, especially with the price it is right now? wobble There's a reason pumps have cut-outs, I might venture to the second cut-out if the filler neck is a crappy one or I'm on a long journey but spilling stuff that expensive is rather stupid. While putting sand on spilled fuel is reasonable enough the sand around the filler suggests children, a prank or an escapee from a mental hospital.
