Pompeii / Hurculaneum etc . Best place to stay ?
Discussion
We've stayed in the Imperial Tramontano Hotel, Sorrento. Well located, overlooks the Bay of Naples etc, and do get a room looking out over the Bay.

The direct train to Pompeii is the way to go. When you get there, hire a personal guide, well worth the cost s there's so much to see.. or miss.
And if you do stay in Sorrento, I'd recommend an organised day trip to the island of Ischia.

We did this last summer. Stayed in Sorrento, which is good not amazing, but a brilliant base for the area.
We stayed at the Grand Hotel Royal, really nice. Very 1950s chic, spacious and well appointed if traditional rooms. Perched on the cliff top but also benefit from a sea level sun deck (accessed via a lift, or the stairs if you're fitter).

From there we did Pompeii & Vesuvius as well as Napoli, a day on Capri, Positano. We could have done all of the Amalfi Coast from there quote easily, but we moved from 5 days in Sorrento to the Caruso in Ravello (which is probably the best hotel I have ever stayed in) for another 5 days and explored Amalfi from there.
Echo the comments above about booking organised trips, we also used Viator and had a fantastic experience with every one.

If you can really push the boat out, then the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is the place to stay.
My parents stayed here once, purely by luck on one of those Ceefax specials..

Planning a week for the above late Sept .
Looks like plenty to do and see , and also various tours in Viator.
Is Sorrento the place to stay for this ?
All recommendations welcome .
Depends what surroundings you want at your base. Staying in the city of Naples, if you've never done it, is interesting. Lot's to see and do. You can eat for literally pennies if the budget is tight. People with little experience of the place will tell you it's a toilet, but it isn't.Looks like plenty to do and see , and also various tours in Viator.

Sorrento is pleasant enough, but tourists and mosquitoes vie for supremacy.
There are so many possibilities in the Bay of Naples that you'll struggle to find anywhere awful.
We stayed at the Grand Hotel Hermitage. Again Sorrento. Not the most luxurious but excellent location, free shuttle bus into the town (watch out for very expensive taxis!) and good breakfast. Checked the emails and found that in 2017 we stayed a week in August for under £1000.
We also visited Herculaneum and Pompeii. Didn’t have the money for a private tour, but definitely at least pay for a group tour, otherwise I’d agree you often won’t know what you’re looking at.
We also enjoyed visiting Capri and seeing the super-yachts, but it was next level busy.

I m led to believe Naples is unpleasant at best .

Then you've been misled, in my opinion, and I go there fairly often..
Before I first went there years ago, I read that "you'll go to Naples believing it to be awful, but spend some time there and you'll leave as it's biggest advocate". Which is certainly true for me.
But if your idea of what you want is bougainvillea and pristine eye candy buildings, it may not be for you. Amalfi town is a bit more like that.
Mrs L & I stayed at the La Favorita hotel in Sorrento, which was very comfortable - and as said above, a good base for Pompeii and Herculaneum on the train plus boat trip to Capri. The transfer there from Naples airport seemed to take forever on some winding, busy roads; Sorrento itself is indeed busy and seemed expensive, so be prepared for both of those.
The only unscraped car we saw all week was an original Fiat 500, the town's roads are very narrow. One chap in a Merc S class was having a hell of a time, he might still be there.

I visited Pompeii last summer with my own car while on a road trip down as far as Taranto and back. I stayed at the Hotel del Sole in Pompeii itself, chosen mainly because I wanted a secure car park rather than street parking. Hotel was excellent and surprisingly inexpensive. It's also right next to the historical Pompeii, so not a lot of walking needed to get to the main entrance, which is where I took this photo just as I was leaving. If the people weren't ther eit might look like a painting!

Sorrento is a good base although expensive and still on the hot side in September.
Top tip for Pompeii is to look and see what cruise ships are in and when and then go on the day when there or no ships (unlikely) or when the smaller ones are in.
Also if you can, it is better to stay there as late as possible as the crowds will start to disperse early afternoon for the cruise ship lot. We did that and it felt we almost had the place to ourselves.
