I’m in Udaipur with work next week and have the weekend free. I’ve been to city palace and the monsoon palace, has anyone been and what would you recommend? I was thinking of a leopard safari and possibly the car museum?

Ask colleagues and get a driver for the day, cost relatively nothing and will be a trip you'll remember getting into the countryside. No knowledge of that region but did this in Chennai and Bangalore work trips and loved it

Since you say the car museum, assuming it’s the maharajah’s one we visited there’s maybe only a dozen cars there, Rolls and some other British stuff. Used and not pristine, which is fine. But they’re in single or double garages that are roped off across the door so you only really see them head-on; you can’t walk round them or even down the side. There is another hall with a few horse drawn (and antelope drawn IIRC) carriages. And there’s a restaurant, but not sure if it’s operational for Joe Public, but you can always get served a drink. Moderately interesting, but you won’t be spending too much time there unless you spent time imbibing.

As to other stuff not mentioned, there’s a rooftop bar where a scene or two from the Marigold Hotel was filmed. Nice spot of an evening.

…and presumably you’ve done a boat on the lake.

Other than that I’d guess your hosts would have the best ideas of what to do and where to go.

Thanks. Done a boat on the lake already. My Indian colleagues bend over backwards to accommodate, but it’s nice to escape from work (and colleagues) at the weekend.

Spent a week ish there but in 2000 so nothing really to add other than it’s a cool place especially by the lake.
I thought there was a few really cool places to visit a few hours away… but just googled to see details and I think it was jaisalmer frown

Maybe have a look at get your guide and see what takes your fancy.

Sorry did you get the short straw as late Friday night content appraiser? Having done numerous such trips 10 to 15 yrs ago I know weekends can be nice but having cheap massages and watching porn hub is ultimately a bit underwhelming

Last trip I did 14 hour road trip from Bangalore taking in palaces, temples and is one I'll remember forever and cost just over £80 for a health and safety approved driver and car. I was pretty much the only Caucasian all day

Does that suffice to potentially inspire OP?

...but has done a similar trip in Bangalore.
I have been to Udaipur, and to me that seems eminently sensible advice.

Oh the irony of posting this comment, and then subsequent, yet not actually offering personal knowledge of the area hehe

OP the guided tour of the local area sounds like a fantastic idea to me and as others have said, in that region it will cost buttons! I did something similar when I was in Macae (Brazil) recently. My works driver took me to some scenic 'if you know' type places and despite not speaking a word of English (and me not a jot of Portuguese) we had a good day!

yet another one. Did you actually bother to read to OP's post. Did you stop to think. (novel for some), that he has BEEN to India and OMG has thought of getting a local guide...Why when you can do it yourself. The OP seems quite well travelled as opposed to the....Oh I have never been there before BUT here you go.....drivel.

I ended up going to the car museum amongst other things as my colleagues were heading to the City Palace, which I’d seen on a previous trip. As tvrolet says it was only enough to interest you for half an hour, but for a few quid an enjoyable enough half an hour. I think next time it’s a longer trip to see the leopards.
