Audi RS6 GT and A110 GTS - the perfect couple?

We talk a lot about two-car garages at PH - but this duo really might take the end-of-decade biscuit

What do the Audi RS6 Avant and Alpine A110 have in common? Not much. But that’s a good thing. When it comes to ideal two-car garages, opposites attract. And when it comes to these particular cars, you’re looking at the end of the line. Both are due to be succeeded by electrified replacements in the very near future. In the next RS6, its V8 will be hybridised; in the A110, to begin with at least, there will be nothing but battery. The GT and GTS respectively represent the end of an era.

It is this quirk in the lineage that has brought them together - but what better two cars can you imagine seeing out the decade (and potentially the century) with? The BMW M5 CS and Porsche Cayman GT4 RS offer a terrific counterpoint, yes - but there is something undeniably appealing about the idea of Teutonic all-season estate and waif-like, rear-drive Francophone.

Especially when both are in run-out format. The Avant GT, in its exclusive livery, is a bombshell. No passersby need know what it is to pay attention. Which is fitting because this is arguably the last great testament to the Audi Sport quattro way. A fact that makes the A110 a lovely counterpoint: less outrageously silly than the high-priced R, and created deliberately as a ‘best of’ variant.

Which suits fantasy-grade Welsh roads better? Well, that’s what we’re back at Brecon to find out. Or partly that - mostly it’s about celebrating two icons of a fossilised epoch, one if not quite gone, then certainly about to change beyond all recognition. If we’ve already convinced you of the wonderfulness of either car, you can buy one here and the other here. Or you can reminisce about what a blast it’s been to drive either in the usual spot. Either way, enjoy.

On paper, a nice 2 car garage, but I’ve never liked the look of the Alpine and as for the Audi, too “in your face” for me so I’ll pass on both.

Without wanting to start a great debate about why the Alpine never got a manual ‘box, the toy in my perfect two car garage would have to have a manual ‘box.

I learned in my life, to never have a daily faster/guicker than your fun car. I just does not work.
Same as here.

April 2026 is not the “end of decade”.

Fun and refreshingly unpretentious vid. More please, PH.
Alpine? Absolutely, yes please. (Especially with a silver set of Life’s forged monoblocks.)
RS6 GT? Yuck.
Would much prefer an Alpina B5 GT Touring, not least because its width is 1868mm vs. the RS6’s 1951mm.

The end of century comment was an even bolder (and bizarre) comment. Seventy four years from now…is a long way away!

For a two car garage I want a performance car and a daily/family car.

With Audi, I'd rather a comfier estate for family/dog transport, I can't think of a scenario where I'd need or want to go fast with a car full of kids and a dog. It's certainly not a car I'd just go for a drive in, too big and heavy.

Alpine, love them, still prefer a convertible for a morning blast out though.

For me, and this budget, an EV estate and a late Exige 410 would be my choice.

I'm not sure I could go back to a two car garage but if I could, and with this budget, it wouldn't be this. The Audi's running costs and the ability to use a fraction of its power if i had the family with me would be limited unless I wanted a day arguing....
At this budget, I'll take the EV Range Rover (when it's out) and an E46 M3 with a S85 and DCT please

(Yes, similar to what I already have)

As of a few days ago, the Alpine is no longer available to order. Cars available from dealer stock only hereafter.

My real world budget 2 car garage would be a Subaru Legacy mk4 estate petrol manual & a Mazda MX-5 mk3 with folding hard top. 10 grand the pair, easy. Tow bar on the Legacy for a motorbike trailer.

Both turbo and auto? Count me out.

The Alpine left me very cold when I tested one. Great dynamics, but the engine and box ruin it for me.

I'd rather have an Elise/Exige/718 manual for toy.

As for family car, the RS6 is such a boring and obvious choice. Too big and expensive to enjoy pretty much anywhere. I'd go for something more quirky, older, smaller and more spacious inside. Like a Nissan Stagea or an Evo wagon.

Oddly enough I could have (almost) repeated this photo on Monday. I drove over the wonderful A686 over Hartside pass between Hexham and Penrith in my A110 and at the car park at the top I pulled over and had a chat with another chap who’d made his way up there in his RS6. Two very different cars for sure, but a shared love of a great road.

Two great & interesting cars as opposite as one could get. Great video and presenting - enjoyed that

IMHO the buckets make the Alpine interior feel special. I’m not a fan of the comfort seats.

In my experience you're often alone in your family car (just dropped the kids off somewhere, coming back from the tip etc) so I'd always want a bit of entertainment from my daily driver.

Pretty much bang on what I'd go for but the new iX3 (I know, I know) makes a compelling case. So I'd go iX3 and 718 Spyder RS.

Doesn't work in what way?

I had a 700bhp E63 estate alongside first and Evora GT410 and then my A110, and it was miles and miles quicker than both, and sounded better than both too. That said, at the end of the day, it was still a 2.2 ton estate car in black, it wasn't even close to the other two dynamically and didn't really look all that great. I'd always choose to pick either the Lotus or Alpine for a pleasurable drive, even when I really enjoyed the Mercedes and having all the power in the world.

Not at all saying you're wrong, it's your opinion, you can't be wrong. Just wondering what about it doesn't work for you?
