My lad’s got his eye on a Rolex as his first proper watch. I’ve tried to talk him out of it as, to me at least, it feels like an obscene amount of money to be spending on a watch. That said, he’s doing well for himself, so fair play, it’s ultimately his call.

If he does go ahead with it, I’d much rather he bought through a legit route rather than taking any risks. Are there any Rolex owners on here who’ve got a good authorised dealer contact they’d recommend?

He also keeps mentioning waitlists for buying new, which I don’t fully understand. Is that just how it works now, or are there ways around it?

Any advice appreciated.

It's very unlikely that you/your father could walk into an AD and buy a brand new Yachtmaster. Some AD's now carry Rolex approved used, but being Rolex approved, they will be top money. I'd suggest having a look online at some well respected dealers such as Hackett Watches, The Watch Room or Luxury Watch Company.

What Stewart says above...

Yes there are waiting lists at Rolex approved dealers - although I am not familiar enough with the Yacht Master to know what the waiting time is. It might be shorter on white gold - not sure.

Obviously a target for muggers - something your son should bear in mind if he's out clubbing for example! Two of my sons have had their watches stolen - fortunately not massively expensive watches, but even so.....

If he were to go for a used watch, there are quite a few highly reputable dealers and the watch will be pretty much 'as new' in some cases. Dominic (mentioned above) is recommended, I've bought a Rolex from him before and it was an easy and perfect transaction.

I'd be really surprised if there is a wait on a white gold YM honestly speaking.

Pretty much all precious metal Rolexes (aside from platinum Daytona perhaps) are in windows and for sale.

Last time I went into my local they had the WG/RG/YG YM's there to buy for anyone on the day. They're desperate to sell these, as they aren't really in demand.

The bigger question is why anyone would buy one brand new for £31 750, when you can get one pre owned for £21 000 biglaugh

Ouch, they've tanked.

Just did a dummy sale, and Watchfinder are offering "up to" £16 800 for one!

So I'd be trying to convince your lad to go pre owned, if not he's losing £16k the second he walks out with a new one.

I'd feel extremely comfortable buying from Watchfinder, Subdial and Hackett Watches - have done deals with all of them in the past and zero issues.

It would be pretty crazy to buy a white gold YM new unless he really wants to throw the money away for some reason. That being said I would imagine as others have said that particular watch can probably be bought as a walk in at an AD with a little work to find an AD who has it in stock, at the most I bet if he puts his name on a "wait list" with a couple of AD's he gets a call back within a few weeks

£30k for a simple watch on a rubber strap is insane given the alternatives at that price.
