Not sure if this should be in the Health forum or Food and Drink. I usually buy Tea Pigs Green Mao Feng tea (pyramid bags) but fancy a change, a quick Google suggests 'loose' tea leafs in an infuser, which then linked me to something about green tea having health benefits? Does anyone have experience with green tea and can recommend a brand or type? Thanks

Can't stand green tea, I think it comes from working in China for a bit where it was the only option, always loose leaf and constantly picking bits out of your mouth... I much prefer a black lapsang souchong if I am drinking tea without milk.

I think the specific green tea with the most health benefits (from a weight loss perspective) is 'Matcha' green tea, but then you might as well just take it as a supplement if you are having it just for benefits rather than to enjoy a cup a tea, plenty of providers out there.

Earlier this week we visited a tea plantation in Sri Lanka; a very interesting and serine experience which I would thoroughly recommend for anyone interested in such things. I took the following photos of their tea blends with the claimed associated health benefits. I can’t comment on the validity of what is claimed, but certainly it’s a basis for further individual research:

If there were materially important, discernible health benefits, someone would have discerned them by now and there'd be public health messaging blaring out.

Sadly the health benefits of exercising, not smoking, not boozing and not being a fat knacker are completely indisputably backed by evidence and most of us would do well to finally start acting accordingly. Despite that, I'm eating at the pub tonight.

Milky Oolong tea drinker here and I'm unsure of the health benefits if I'm honest but it is rather delicious.

When I'm in the U.K. I'd buy it from the True Tea Co but they source it from Thailand and not Taiwan. I often frequent a Uighur restaurant and I usually buy their Milky Oolong tea for home use so if you have a decent Uighur restaurant near you ask them if they have any you can buy.

I’ve just spent six weeks in Sri Lanka and also visited tea plantations and factories. Very interesting.
I drink Silver Tips and Golden Tips, wonderful rare leaves with high antioxidant properties. Don’t know if they do me any good, probably offset by the pints of Peroni and bottles of wine I drink.

I did try moving to Green Tea for a while to get myself off Coffee and I think I drank it for about 6 months, I can't say I found any particular health benefits in it and for me at least it took a while to convince myself I liked it. I eventually gave up again and went back to drinking coffee.

Thanks for replies. I agree it takes some getting used to... I wanted an alternative to coffee and hated it at first but stuck with it and now I enjoy a couple of cups a day. The one thing I do find though is drinking on an empty stomach makes me feel nauseous - so it's usually mid-morning before I can enjoy it best

I've never really liked green tea but thought I should force some down for the supposed health benefits. I've now started drinking it cold, I make it as usual with boiling water but only make around half a cup which I then pour into a bottle and top off with cold water. I take it to work or out and about and find it quite refreshing, certainly preferable to plain water.

I have the odd cup, find it’s easy to over brew. Tend to use water about 70 degrees and 30sec or so brewing time. Not really fussed about type, current lot is gunpowder from hunan. Not that keen on matcha.
