People in the wealthiest areas can have 20 more years of good health than those in the poorest, according to a new report.

It also concludes that the UK has the second-lowest healthy life expectancy of high-income countries, which includes those in western Europe, the Nordics, North America and Oceania.

Doesn't surprise me. There's a large gap between where I live and the roughest local area a 20 minute drive away.

Genetics.

That's an eye-opener, and not in a good way.

Also notable that the only country doing worse is the USA.

I am not surprised.

As the sun was out at the weekend, the large number of overweight/obese people/families was once again visible.

-Many women now wear trousers that do a very good job of suspending/concealing a very large gut if covered by a long top.

This was in a park in a relatively affluent area.

Chomping on snacks and crap food is the norm. Many people are struggling, feel down and depressed.

Lean, happy, middle-aged people are in the small minority.

How have you arrived at the conclusion that genetics is the cause for the difference?

And lifestyle and life choices.

You can be poor, but you can still eat a healthy diet, don't smoke, take exercise, etc.

I struggle with the article, my father grew up on a farm as a labourer at the time when much farming was done with horses - hard work that few these days would understand, rationing, etc. National service followed and he then joined the police. We lived in some rough areas (police provided a house in those days so you lived where you were told).

Retired in the 80s and started up as a driving instructor. Retired again in the 90s.

Still going strong at 97!

Would being wealthy have given him another 20 years - no.

Taking care of yourself (don’t drink, eat, or smoke to excess) gives you the extra years.

I'm sure Reform will fix that.

Can't be too hard, it's only one step on the podium.

Well, it isn't guaranteed, but it gets the law of averages on your side.

Best wishes to him but that's massively exceptional for ex-police. Where his parents long-lived?

I thought this was going to be about how Palantir are harvesting / being given all our UK NHS data so they can make even more money.

I think when life is hard folk reach for cheap, easy and reliable self gratification to have some pleasure and a break from things.

Its easy to end up going too far down a particular avenue, you put weight on, you get diabetic, your mobility suffers, you move less and you end up immobile.

Not everyone has the time to exercise, a lot of folk dont understand nutrition, bad food tastes good and being large is normalised and accepted in poorer areas. Good food is expensive, paid £16 for two small fillet steaks from Sainsburys, pies, chips and pasties are comparatively cheap.

Companies will cater to this, was in a pub in Doncaster as was there with work and the place was geared towards huge portions, a carvery with various options and a massive selection of huge pieces of cakes and other desserts, like four normal slices worth.

Exercise is hard, harder when you are bigger and unfit, and if nobody else does it that makes it more difficult.

Its easy to pontificate but unless you are in someone elses position its hard to see what their life is actually like, sometimes we forget what advantages we have.

Timely access to healthcare also a factor.

If you're wealthy you have the option to pay for immediate testing and scanning whereas NHS can be a bit of a lottery.

Early diagnosis can be pivotal to outcomes and subsequent longevity.

Good food is also cheap, fresh veg in season is not expensive. Making your own food from scratch is not expensive. Steaks are expensive and there are alternatives sources of protein that are not so expensive. The issue is it's easier to just buy junk.

Well, the obvious next step is to redistribute more wealth to the poor so they'll be, umm, healthy I guess.....
