In 2018 we participated in an TRRL EV trial. We were provided with a VW eGolf for 6 weeks. This Rolec charger was installled. It has not been used since. Is there any way that I can check whether it is still working? Our cars are ICE.

Ask a friend or a local PHer with an EV to pop round

I was going to say it’s a Rolec, it won’t work, but it’s not really been used so if the PCB has stayed dry there is a good chance. Easiest is to ask a friend or neighbour with an EV.

I have had one of these Rolecs since 2018. Apart from one contactor failure (touch wood) which was fixed under warranty, it has been fine and used thousands of times to recharge my better half s BMW i3 and my company PHEV. If you can confirm it s working stick with it: what about a dealer demo to test it?!

Note: the corona ring only lights up when plugged in, changes to green when charging and back to blue when fully charged (or the car s preset value).

I note it’s untethered - no charge cable. If you go for a plug-in car then you might want to get it switched to a tethered type (as mine is). More convenient but there are other considerations to.

Is there a Tesla self service location anywhere near you? You can book an hours test drive online and go and drive one without much human interaction. Could pop home and plug it in and see what happens.

Many thanks for the suggestions. There's a fella down the road who has an electric Kia. I might ask him if he wouldn't mind testing it. He's a bit techy as well which should help! My daughter has just got a VW ID Buzz so it's a useful fall back in case she is low on charge when she visits.

Have the same charger from 2016 :-)

Had to replace RCB .. but otherwise good.

Unless you really need a smart charger I’d keep it
