Just had one for a small Kitchen with Oven and Hob which was nearly £6.5k.

The Worktop was nearly £700 by itself.

I remember reading somewhere on here of success in getting Howdens price down by getting a quote from an online seller as a comparable. I can't remember which company it was.

Can anyone help?

If you've got the brand name of the worktop you might find it.
We bought a worktop to match an existing one from the 'worktop hive' website.
I think they are the same firm as 'worktop express'.
Delivery is quite pricey, but the bottom line was OK.

I had a kitchen put in last year.

Howdens gave a price.

Listen carefully as to what goes where because you don't get a proper plan, only 3D pictures.

I went to DIY and made the same kitchen with a similar quality. I sent that quote to Howdens and they matched it

Just going through similar myself OP.

My installer favours Howden due to easy access to spares/existing relationship etc, but the OH wants an internally curved corner base unit which Howdens don't seem to do (at least in ranges we're interested in).

The Howden quote that we did have (with corner pull out unit instead) was miles higher than the DIY kitchens quote (with curved unit).

When i was getting quotes for my kitchen Howdens did offer to price match but started off excessively expensive so its kind of like dealing with a stereotypical car dealer and having to haggle

Howdens have an awful method of pricing.

They quote the retail price, then the trade customer obtains a discount (So for eg a base unit that say retails at £300 gets a trade discount of say 20% knocking it down to £240)

The trouble is the trade discount differs between each trade account.

I have bought many kitchens from them and always feel as if the next tradesman could be purchasing for significantly less.

Just had our utility room redone with 7 cupboards, new worktop and sink and tap etc and told Howdens who was our preferred fitter and the price/ discount was given accordingly but the designer did say it was the same price that her “ usual “ traders would get.

This is the site I used a few years ago with Howdens.
Priced it up pretty much exactly (a few items not comparatively matched) they took an extra 10% off the matched price and threw in a dishwasher.

I also got our quartz worktops from a local supplier as they were a lot cheaper and better quality.

Why do you want Howdens to price match?

Surely you're just better off with DIY kitchens or similar full stop?

The fact they mess you around and then happily drop the price seems like tttish behaviour to start with.

Howdens make it cheaper, or at least they did for me and threw in a dishwasher. You can also see and touch what you want to buy.

I suppose you pay your money, you make your choice.

Yeah it just makes you wonder what the real price/value is if they can throw in a free dishwasher and drop the price to match people who provide a proper list price.

It's just a weird game and doesn't sit well with me. But yes there is a lot to be said for being able to see a product before buying it, increasingly difficult in this day and age and quite important for a kitchen imo!

In our case I wasn’t bothered about price matching as had already seen the products we wanted and just asked for their best price.
My fitter had already said to me that in his opinion the quality we were going for was well worth it.
The free design service at the house was also extremely useful.
No messing around whatsoever and delivery was only when we were ready for the install and to the day.
There was one small piece of plumbing sent incorrectly but the designer dropped off the right piece on the way home which I thought was also pretty decent service.

My brother fitted a few in his old and new house so he's obviously happy. But he did say the weird pricing was annoying as you can't easily budget and you're kinda spending time getting right into the details before you know the actual price.

I’ve had a dozen or so DIY kitchens now, there’s not much in it but they are slightly better quality than Howdens, and cheaper, even compared to my own account rates. Howdens pricing policy really pees me off, I only use them for odds and sods now.

Our fitter (subbie to our builder) said Howdens are in a different league in terms of support - any issues with missed items, damage etc and they almost always have replacements immediately available. He said others can be a nighmare which customers somehow think is his fault and expect him to sort out, then revisit at a later date to finish the job.

Fair point.
Mrs alscar doesn’t really relate to budgets though.

Thanks all-really helpful.

DIY Kitchens was the Company that I was thinking of.

Has anyone simply sent them the quote from Howdens and asked for their price? Or did you just list out the various components in an email?
