Let’s hear it for Thermos, the company that really cares about your safety, as long as you’re an American. For Europeans, not so much.

I happen to be one who bought one of their affected products, probably via Amazon UK 15 years+ ago. Learning it can cause injury or permanent blindness is not so fun, not when the company apparently only cares to replace the stoppers with a safer variant for those who live in the US.

So I wonder, does Thermos actually care about safety, or just the cost of lawsuits?

13. I live outside the United States, can I submit a claim for a replacement stopper or bottle?

At this time, we are only processing claims and replacements for the U.S.

I might open a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

I think I've got one of those.

On the other hand, the chances of me leaving perishable food in it for an 'extended period of time' - enough that it builds up enough gas pressure to launch the lid like a mortar when I try to open it and blinds me - are so small that I can live with the risk.

I’m actually proud that they haven’t issued a recall in the U.K., whether it’s because of the legal framework here or that they don’t think we’re that lacking in common sense.

There’s quite a few examples of this sort of thing in the automotive world - look at SBC braking systems on Mercedes cars as an example. Very expensive safety critical system with a finite life. Although they did replace them on UK cars for a bit (I got mine done) free that has gone out of the window - most you’ll get now is a bit of goodwill. US they’ll do them.

I’m sure there are many more examples.
