I just don't understand how criminals can be so thick. There was zero chance he was ever going to get away with it. Literally any other plan would have been far better.

Is it drugs? In some kind of weird drug induced state he thought it would be a great idea?

Some "rapper" killed his 14 year old girlfriend, chopped her up and left her in the frunk of his car.

OP is asking how/why he thought he'd get away with it.

If you have a loud minority section of society telling you that the fact you are fked up and a is NOT your fault and you are OWED and there will be no punishment for your sins as YOU'RE a victim.

Then people shouldn't be surprised when those same fked up s, do fked up stuff as easily as you take a piss! Normally its just blatant theft from shops since, mostly no charges are pressed. But every now and then you get someone who pushes the limits even further.

In this case its the USA but it applies to a worryingly high number of s over here in Blighty! (see shoplifting, e-bikes, open drug use on the streets, sexual assault etc etc etc)

A study back in the late 2000s suggested that the average IQ of 18-20-somethings in UK jails was ~85, and a significant proportion (~20%) were actual or borderline cognitive impaired.

So that's how...

Are iq tests a true reflection of a person's capability? I hope not, I'm hopelessly out of my depth any time I've tried one...

Once upon a time I worked for an agency for cash at university. I met some interesting people. One chap appeared to know he was doing wrong nicking cars but just kept doing it.

He seemed completely functional but just couldn’t stack up how repeated crime and getting caught was reducing his quality of life and prospects.

It seems horrible to say but I think some people would be better served with some more robust neural network training.
The ‘safe’ slope down seems to not act as a deterrent but actually like an insidious trap making them think it’s not so bad, but actually is, but the consequences take too long to be noticed till it’s too late.

I assume the basic concept is if you are bit thick (i.e. low IQ) then you might not be bright enough to work out that you will get caught....

That's how I got so many arrests.

Many criminals are a bit slow but often have a sort of cunning. Another trait is that they can influence people, particularly on a one-to-one. They appear quite charming, but there's no depth to them.

Most criminals are not stupid or even of low IQ. Most of the ones caught are, but the majority get away with it. The ones in, for instance, the City of London got away with £millions. Enquiries often had a cut-off point just because there were so many suspects and so few fraud squad officers. Of particular note is that the corrupt officers, in my day populating CID in the main back in the late 70s/early 80s were obviously corrupt but the careful planning made it difficult to convict. They abused the system, in the same way many criminals in particular trades, such as banking, insurance, etc do. They don't get charged or put away. The best thing with Operation Countryman was many of the corrupt ones resigned/retired. One bloke put all his criminal money in his wife's name and when asked how come his wife had £million+ he said she was a good manager.

Criminals, at least the successful ones, are not thick, and they outnumber the rest.

I was asking a genuine question. These kind of tests really confuse me and I've never manged them.

The theory is there are a number of gauges of intelligence. A quick Google of 'how many types of intelligence are there' reveals a choice, from around 7 to a dozen or so. IQ is a measure of one type. One of the blokes I was at college with was not the sharpest tool around, and was put back a year, yet could play multiple instruments, wrote music and played chess at a high level, so I have an open mind with the theory. To reinforce that, I had a very high score on spatial awareness and, despite not knowing what it meant, I was very proud of it.

IIRC they were originally intended to filter out people who would struggle in school and require extra help or to classify, say, conscripts into groups according to which roles they'd be suited to. Lots of abstraction and internal modeling of concepts.

So it's usually misapplied colloquially.

From personal experience really, really stupid people can be a lot of work to be around and naturally assume you're taking the piss out of them if you make some subtle or ironic joke they don't understand. But they have their uses, get on it biggbn:
