1) Birdwatching. Why? It's a small brown bird. Does it matter what it's called?

2) Astronomy. You're not going to discover anything that hasn't already been discovered. So what's the big deal in finding Saturn and saying 'Oh look that must be Saturn'? Go inside and keep warm like normal people.

So what hobby leaves you totally unimpressed?

I think they're about appreciating nature and what's out there.

Train spotting in the cold and wet...yes it's a train and looks like all the other trains you've seen going along the same track and the same speed.

Collecting magazine collectors magazines...yes that's right I was sat behind a guy on the bus who had a load of "Book and Magazine Collectors" Magazines!

The trainspotters probably say the same about this site. All the geeks' appreciating cars on the interweb...

Now that is funny

I can't laugh though, I have many pointless hobbies like scale modelling and being an aircraft/car anorak

Still most things are pointless if you think about it, why buy a sports car is you can speed, or go driving round and round a race track without going anywhere? Pointless and expensive to an outsider, but lots of fun for those who enjoy it.

Its generally not hurting anyone and everyone has their own things they find interesting. Its not like a misguided or destructive hobby like banning 4WDs. Try and be a little less close minded.

True to a certain extent, although for most sports the participants can say it makes burning off some calories a bit more interesting than just plodding away on a treadmill or similar.

Collecting bird eggs.

I find it hard to imagine a more boring, difficult, pointless, highly illegal activity

You'll be the one that missed the satirical angle then.... You're supposed to post hobbies, as practiced by others, that *you* find pointless, not the ones *you do*.
Now have another go

I've done both astronomy AND plane spotting - on and off and they can still be of interest to me.

It is true that two planes may be identical apart from different serials or regiustrations but, through their life, they will have a different history. Part of the interest of plane spotting is following an aircraft through its career.

However, plane spotting for me was always an adjunct to my overall interest in aircraft - which also included photography and model making and just reading up on aircraft and attending airshows.

The whole point of a hobby is how it pleases YOU - not anyone else. If someone else doesn't understanf why you do it, that's their problem, not yours. We can't all like everything.

Wasnt there something in the paper recently about some woman who collected anything to do with frogs. I mean how pointless is it to have 1000's of frog related stuff

Nooooo!

Read the instructions.

1) Think of a hobby that YOU think is pointless. Tell us what it is.

2) Do NOT think of your own hobbies.

Jeez, why is life so hard?

This THREAD is pointless.

As I don't do 99.99999999999999999 of all the hobbies that I could possibly do, then 99.9999999999999999 are probably pointless...to me.

In actual fact, I don't think ANY hobbies are pointless - if they please the person who participates in them.

Sitting in the corner of a dark room on a three legged stool with a bag over your head making beeping noises. I never did understand that one.

I think it works better with a four legged stool and making a humming noise. Try that.... it's much more fun.
