Hi, i am looking at car hire for 10 days and i have found a decent price for what i need ,i have noticed that the damage waiver is include but excess protection is extra with a charge of £18 a day its something i would consider taking up but wondered if i could purchase this myself like i do with my legal cover on car insurance .If anyone as any experience on this and recommendations of a company to use it would be appreciated .Thanks

Yes, there are stand alone policies that you can purchase - a Google search reveals many options.

I will be using one to give third party liability and CDW cover for a hire car in Alaska.

Pretty certain that you can get cover for UK hire as well as worldwide- USA cover is typically more expensive.

Yep, far far cheaper to have a stand alone policy.

Some firms won’t cover certain ‘dubious’ rental companies due to over zealous damage claims hence why you were asked.

You can purchase your own separate cover and it can be cheaper, but you will be in a pay for the damage yourself and then claim it back situation if it did happen, so you'd presumably need good paperwork and damage reports etc. It can be less hassle to go with the car hire company's cover as you can then just walk away - something to bear in mind.
