Most will never have seen Rathbone, but yes, you are indubitably correct Watson.

American, which ends any possibility of him being considered.

Please leave your xenophobia out of this thread.

William made the character his own, nobody else managed the same.

So clearly not the end of thread. The most ridiculous of things to add to any post. Almost as ridiculous as dismissing an actor due to his nationality.

wink

It's unlikely that anyone alive today can compare Gillette's Holmes as they won't have seen it. I'm sure there are critical comparisons of Rathbone vs Gillette somewhere if you could be bothered to search for it.

If we're going to compare anyone with William Gillette's Sherlock then surely it would be the multi talented Charlie Brookfield. wink

My answer is Jeremy Brett or Basil Rathbone.

I like both. If I've counted correctly there's 38 years between the last Basil & the first Jeremy episodes.

Personally, I like both Rathbone and Brett, as they both brought something slightly different to the role. Rathbone was the archetypal Englishman and Brett had the underlying troubled part of Holmes character off to a tee. If I find either of them in the TV schedule I will record and enjoy at my leisure!

I thought Peter Cushing was a very good, albeit often forgotten, Holmes. Supposedly took a lot of trouble to try and get it right.

(Though I do watch the Rathbone films repeatedly, and he is probably my favourite).

Clive Merrison played Holmes in 60+ BBC radio adaptations in the 80s & 90s.

Every single Holmes story was dramatised and they can be heard in a 49 hour long Audiobook.

His portrayal is perfectly aligned to the character in Conan-Doyle's books, IMO.

Well worth a listen.

Jeremy Brett the best.

Rathbone, couple of good films but the whole WWII USA propaganda and NAZIs just doesn't work.

Loved Jeremy Brett, he occupies the character more than playing it.
