I used to know stuff but over the last 15 years I've fallen behind. I am confused by the numbering system. Is 5060 better than 4070? And so much more. I was going to make the jump a year or so ago, but the prices! I mean, of kitchen units.

I built my own desktop three or four years ago.

Ryzen 9 3900X, 3.79GHhz, with 64GB RAM - 2133 MT/s, and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 12GB DDR6. I've got a 2TB M2 SSD for the OS and another I use for video files I'm working on. I've got 24TB of internal HDD storage, which is a little over half full.

I use my desktop for image manipulation, including vector, with Affinity2. My main use is video editing with Resolve Studio, and that's where a problem has arisen. It has brought in a number of AI, their term, features, and my desktop struggles, sometimes even freezing when masking, particularly magic mask, something it's only just started to do since the AI features. For the first time ever, it refused to render a project. I already use proxies for video.

Given the prices, what is my best option for an upgrade? No games. Hopefully no more than £750, or is that too little to ask?

According to PugetBench for DaVinci Resolve, a 12GB 5070 is 2-3x faster than the 3060 in AI Magic Mask v2 (and also 2x faster in rendering).

The rest of the GPU results are here:

A newer/faster CPU doesn't seem to make any significant difference so most processes (20-40% faster with a 9900X).

Unfortunately you've just missed out on a 'low' priced £470 12GB 5070 on Very...

...and the next tier 5070Ti is another 50% cost on top for another 25% performance in AI Magic Mask.

Thanks for that.

I was under the impression, back when I was a bit more interested, that the cards with three fans were more for gamers and overclocking. Is this myth?

Mind you, the 16GB 5070 at £839 is just within my budget of £750. Or so.

You've been helpful.

Do your fans spool up on your graphics card when its doing the AI stuff?

I messed around with running a local AI a few months ago and when it was set up to run on the the graphics card the fans really kicked in.

Yes, they do. I monitor the temperatures, and they are not that high, and drop significantly once the fans come on. The shutdowns come almost out of the blue. The temps go up a bit, and then Resolve freezes. Rendering was the main cause of fan activation before AI, but there are simple ways around.

I like the idea of local AI, but, it seems, there are downsides.

Number of fans are just for aesthetics and acoustics.

The 16GB 5070Ti has 50% more AI TOPS and 2x the NV Encoders than the 12GB 5970, so will see a significant improvement in the accelerated AI stuff and video encoding/rendering.

£790-£799 if you re not fussy about brand, size or aesthetics
